Giant Yorkie??? Can every one please tell me how much your Yorkie weighs. The breeder told me my Yorkie would be approx. 7 or 8lbs at maturity. Bauer is almost a year old and weighs 15 lbs!!! And he is not over weight. The doctor says he is the perfect weight for his size. I figure the breeder must have lied to me. But the vet says "no one can truly guess what a dogs size will be. Sometimes short parents have tall children". Everything I read says the average Yorkie weighs approx. 7lbs unless its a tea cup yorkie and then it would weigh less. Do I have an unusually large Yorkie????? |
Welcome to YT! Large Yorkies are not that unusual, both of mine are about 15 lbs. There is no such thing as "teacup" its just a fancy way of saying small. The standard is 7lbs, then there are the teenies that are less. Way back in the day yorkies were around the 15 lb mark, then they were bred to be smaller. So kind of a sarcastic counter to people saying "teacup" we call the big ones "teapots".:D |
Welcome to YT. No you do not have an exceptional Yorkie. I found this site just as you did. Buddy weighs 15lbs and there are lot's more on this site that have reached above or close to this weight. Do a search above and type in larger yorkies. You should see all of them under that. You will be amazed just how many there are. Members here call them Teapots. There is no such thing as a teacup yorkie. It's just another way of getting bigger bucks for the little ones. Buddy is very muscular like your Yorkie. I hope you can post pictures of your big guy. I would love to see him. He can join the Teapot club. |
Benji is 8 and 1/2 pounds. But the vet said he was getting a little chunky so I need to stop giving him so many treats....hehe Yorkies come in all different shapes and sizes. |
I was told Loki would be 7-8 pounds and he is 12. He was 3.5-4lbs at 13 weeks. He's got long legs and a long body. He still looks like a Yorkie. He's just special :D |
Thank you!!! Now I don't feel like Bauer is such an oddity!!! |

just look to the left , i have a porky yorkie too,, 9- 10 lbs, love her to death |
Also the standard is "Under 7 pounds" or sometimes I've seen it as "4-7 pounds" There is no such thing as a teacup Yorkie, a Yorkie is a "Toy" breed no matter the size. Yorkies come in all sizes just like you see other types of dogs in all sizes. I've seen 10 pound beagles and 40 pound beagles, but they are still Beagles. |
My Prince was 9 pounds and I loved every pound of him, I hate when people go on and on talking about their tea-cup yorkie, since there is no such thing really, I say enjoy everybit of him. |
My Chachi is 11 lbs. There are lots of yorkies over 7 lbs |
I have 2 teapots. Shooter is 2 years old and weighs in at 14.2 lbs, and Maggie is 1-1/2 yrs. old and weighs in at 12 lbs. |
My Coffee is about 12 1/2 lbs. His parents. grandparent etc. were all small. I guess it just happens sometimes. More to love! |
I was told my first one(haley, she'll be 5 in Jan) would be 4 lbs. well, she's now 14 lbs. They used to breed them bigger and there are still throw backs. I know when mine passed the 4 lbs mark before she was 4 mos. the breeder said she would take her back and give me another one, I of course said NO WAY, as I was already in love with her..The standard on yorkies is UP to 7 lbs. but, that's just by what AKC says..With the big ones, there is just more to love!! |
Sounds like you have a teapot! I love the teapot Yorkies - so cuddly looking :) |
