Getting a yorkie, need advice please!!!!! Hi I'm new here. My name is Treena and I used to own a yorkie when I was little. It's been about 20 years since I've owned one but have always wanted another one. Well, today is my birthday and my husband told me we could get one. Here's the dilemma and I could use some advice. We have a 3 yr old male pug and an 11 month old son. Our son gets along well with our pug so that's not the worry. My husband is worried about potty training the new puppy. Our pug is potty trained but still "marks" when he gets mad at us. I just wanted to see what other people would do in my situation. I've wanted another yorkie for so long but I don't want to be selfish and cause any harm to the yorkie or our pug. Any advice please! Thanks. Treena  |
well from what i hear from people and my own situations is that most yorkies are scared of pugs cause of there breathing my 2 are so scared of my friends pug this is my opinion ^ if your house isnt nuts i dont see what not you cant get another dog like you kid pulling the dogs ears and everyone running all over the place and you screaming at the top of your lungs if this is how you house is why put your self throught more crazyness ya know what i mean good luck :) |
is your pug agressive towards other dogs?? if not then he should be fine with a puppy coming into the home, i wouldnt advise getting a full grown one because there could be dominance issues between the two dogs, as for your son, yorkies are known to be a little fragile, maybe when you go look at puppies you could steer more towards the larger puppies in teh litters? If you get a male and nueter him before he starts the lift his leg, then he shouldnt mark... as far as teh potty training, im just now going through it myself, they learn pretty quickly though, it just takes patience........ happy birthday, and take youre time..... another thing you might consider is introducing the yorkie puppy and youre puug on "nuetral territory".... but i dont see why it would cause harm to either one..... good luck, make sure you do youre "homework" before you get one, and look around a bit, breeders arent always what they seem, adn some wont hesitate to take advantage...... |
Happy Birthday! We had a one year old yorkie when we bought our second yorkie (she was 10 weeks old) and we were told that because of the age difference, they would do fine. This is mainly because the older dog will teach the younger dog how to "behave" (potty, eat, etc.) Also, there shouldn't be a dominance issue because again, the older dog will teach the puppy how to behave. I've also heard that if you get the opposite sex dog, they get along better. Ours our both females and they get along great - so I guess it all depends on the dog. Good luck! |
I've heard that opposit sex thing too, but i have to disagree...... ive had two males at one time and three females at one time.... i dont really think it makes too much of a differance if what she gets is a puppy and nto an adult |
my dogs are both males |
Happy Birthday. I think he will be find if you bring in a puppy. I have three dogs and they all get along great. Maddie was a little over a year when I got Rudy and I thin she thought she was his mother. Lucky my 15 year old chow-mix is so kind heart she loves both my yorkies even when they drive her crazy. Like what others have posted take your time and be carefull, because there are some people that misrepresent them selves. Don't get discouraged there are a lot of good breeders out there you just have to do your homework. Good luck on your search.................Cindy |
Well, we got our yorkie and named him Bruno. He was born on 10/28 so he's 9 weeks old today. Things have been going pretty well. Our pug Chopper and Bruno play well together. When Chopper gets tired of playing he just jumps onto the couch where Bruno can't reach him. My husband picked him out from a breeder so I wasn't there to ask any ?'s. I'm setting up an appointment with our vet as I type. Thanks to those of you who responded to my post. I'll keep you all updated. Now the fun of potty training begins! :p Treena and Bruno |
