Pooping in crate? Hello! I'm having some issues with my baby!! We are trying to crate train Lexie so that her potty training will be easier. Well every time she is in her crate she poops EVERYWHERE and gets it stuck in her hair and even on the ceiling of the crate. I don't know what to do! I figured that maybe it was just an accident the first time. Then the second time she was only in there for 15 minutes at the most and she was CAKED in poo...then tonight it happened again! She is only in there for a maximum of 45 minutes each time! I don't know what to do anymore! Beau never had this problem except the few times that he had an accident. HELP PLEASE!!! :eek: :eek: |
I am not real fond of crate training, I've always used an xpen, this way, they have plenty of room to play, room for a bed, food, water and pee pad. I never liked mine not being able to go potty when they have too, and they don't like messing in their crates.. |

The only time I have had a problem with messing in the crate is when they had a bad tummy. I just went through this for a week, and yuk it is a mess.:eek: :eek: I had to train my youngest one on pp pads which I never used before. Now she will not go outside, she will wait and come in and go on the pp pad. :( She is the only one out of 4 that uses it. So I am kinda lost on where to go also on that part. :confused: pooh's mum |
I did this with mine for the first few days. It might take longer with yours. Put the crate inside the xpen with the door off. Everytime you find her asleep, put her inside her crate. This way she can still get out and will hopefully learn that her crate is a good thing. Don't shut the door until she's been going inside to sleep on her own for a while. HTH! |
With my babies, I used an x-pen with a shower curtain underneath, thier crate in one corner minus the door, food in a corner close to the crate, and potty pads in a corner far from the crate. They had plenty of room to play, and I took them outside to potty about every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The only time they used the potty pads is if I took too much time between taking them outside. If they used the potty pads, the next time I would take them out sooner. It didn't take long before they just waited until I took them out. The added advantage was, if I was gone from home, they would still use the potty pads and since we take them with us when we travel, they use potty pads just fine in a motel. The best of both worlds. And I have to say that these babies were the easiest babies I ever trained. |
My daughters westie is doing the same thing, pooping in her crate as soon as she just gets done going..it's easy to train them to go outside if they're pee pad trained, you start moving the pee pad closer to the door.. |

Your timing has to be off. We had issues with Sam pooping in the house right after she'd gone outside and it was always the same time of day (morning and afternoon). So for a month or so I sat outside with her as long as 20 minutes until she went and THEN she was free to run around inside. Now she asks (FINALLY) but it was touch and go there for a while. If I'd had enough of sitting outside I would give her a time out by hooking her leash on the doorknob so she could pretty much lay on the rug and hang out but not run around. Then I'd keep taking her out until she went. Eventually she got the idea that she doesn't get to have fun UNTIL she poops outside. Also, Loki had a plastic crate he HATED when he was a puppy. He'd pee in there the second we put him in it and then we'd put him in the wire one while we cleaned it up. He was fine with the wire one. If she is afraid of the crate, just drop lots of treats in there and reward her for being in there. I find mine sleeping in their crates all the time. |
