Does crying ever end? Hey guys, I'm concerned about my little Pikko. He's been with me for just over a week now (he is officially 11 weeks old today), but I thought the crying only happened during the first couple of nights away from his "old" home. He's cried and whined every day and night, even when I leave the room. Is this normal? And if so, will it stop? I work from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (although I do commute by bus, so I leave home an hour earlier to get to work and get home an hour later to get home). My mom works evening shift, so she's home most of the day (if not, she's out for a couple hours doing errands). And my dad, sister, and brother are also around the house sooner than I get home, so he has someone around him most of the day. He has a crate that I put inside of an xpen. He can sleep, eat, and potty there if no one is home. He gets lots of sunshine and has full view of the kitchen as well. I've learned that if I sit with him long enough and tell him "good boy," he'll realize he must have done something good (this phrase has been associated with lots of praise and occasional treats). So it helps when he's just sitting inside his crate and I say "good boy." At night, if he gets tired enough, he'll fall asleep while I repeat my words in a soft voice and pet him. But when I leave for work in the mornings, he isn't sleepy, so my "magic" doesn't work. He'll want to play and then I'll get up to go and he'll cry. I try not to make a big fiasco about leaving. I pretend I'm going in another room so that he thinks I'll just be around the corner. He also has lots of toys and enough food. Does anyone here have a puppy that doesn't cry anymore? How did you get him/her to be more comfortable and stay happy? (Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for all your advice!!!) |
Yes, it does stop It took Sal awhile before he stop crying. Sal is now 10 weeks old. He was 5 weeks when we got him. I used a toy called comfort pal is the toy makes a sound like a heart beat and looks like another dog. I had to buy it online it is not available in stores. Good Luck with your little one. |
It sounds like you're doing everything right. When you put him in his crate, you should lure him in with a treat so that he walks in on his own. This will make his crate/x-pen a positive place for him, as opposed to you picking him up and forcing him in. Just make sure that when he whines, you completely ignore him, and even walk away. If you react to his whining, he will learn that when he whines, you give him attention, and he will keep doing it. My puppy cried and barked when I put him in his crate/x-pen for the day for the first 2 months! Now, he gets sad when I leave, but he doesn't cry or bark. He still get's a sad look on his face :(, but I just leave, without making a big fuss. I've heard that if you make it no big deal, your puppy won't think it's a big deal either. Good luck! |
Yes it's normal for them to cry for awhile when they're pups. I think they go from being used to snuggling with littermates to being the only child. It helps if you leave the crate open during the day so he thinks of it as a safe harbor then being in a 'locked' place. Sounds like you're doing right. Good luck. |

I'm glad to hear your pup stopped crying, although it will still be sad to see his face when I leave...! But it's still good to hear! Thanks for the reassurance. |

I guess I'm just being too impatient or overly worried...I will have faith and hope he doesn't cry as much (or at all) in the next 1-2 months. Thanks for your help, everyone!!! |
I thank god i got lucky then... I got Mi'Leigh at 8weeks and i was ready for it.. I was waiting for her to be just misurable and cry all night... She was a bit nervous in her new home at first but by the time it was time to go to bed she slept all night .. I even got her up at 4am let her potty then put her bac to bed with no problems.. I thought it was maybe cuz she was so tired from the day she had... but here i am 5 days after the first day and my lil one has never whined or cryed all night... She will cry a little bit when she has to go in her carrier and she can't see you but other then that like i said thankfully she is a wonderful lil girl.... |

mine does it at 3 yo you would not believe. this little stinker is back to whiney whiney to go out, to eat, if I left the water dish on the counter, and to get out of the cage at 6 am!! arrgghhh (is that really a word?) It is getting on my nerves. Then he is teaching bichon brother the whiney whiney too. But they are my babies. And maybe I'll try teaching them to talk. I had three quiet years. Oh these little yorkies can be such manipulators. :D |
I use to use this puppy warmer that I got at petco for Deiter. And you just throw it in the microw for a few sec and it warm, then I would put it in with him, That worked for Deiter you might want to get one and give it a try. Like I said Petco It looks like a flat puppie. lol and it is in with the little chew toys. Then I always left a radio on. Good luck |
I went through the same thing with Gracie, and now with Holly. Some days I want to pull my hair out. Holly shuts up if she gets what she wants, out of the pen to run and play or get held. When I can't allow that and she has to be in her pen, I ignore the behavior. Eventually they will learn that when you leave, you will come back. And they must learn that crying gets them nowhere. When I do have to leave for a few hours, I turn on the radio to a talk station. That seems to keep her company and keep her quiet. |
i didn't have that problem with Nathan who because 2 weeks before I got him she had me bring a new baby blanket that i slept on for a week,:) which of course had my scent on it and placed it with him in his crate. By the time i got him he was familiar with the scent and no crying at night. He still has the blanket one yr later and we use it in his car seat!! |
It's normal for them to cry for a while until they get used to being left alone. My little one would cry and howl like a baby coyote  when I would leave for work in the morning. This went on for a while until he got used to the fact that "Mommy has to go to work and I have to stay here in my safe, comfortable X-pen until she comes home." For the first several weeks he was also frantic when I would come home and take him out of the pen -- crying and kissing my face frantically. THEN ONE DAY ... he was quiet when I left in the morning and quiet when I came home, patiently waiting for me to take him out of the pen. Now he's just an absolute love when he's got to be alone. I think it's just part of growing up. |
Awwww Bless his heart. I hope he will be a happy little guy soon. Who is his breeder? Do you have any pictures? |
