Icky Ear drainage I have a female yorkie that keeps on getting a black ear drainage. It really is irritating to her and she shakes her head often and sometimes scratches at them. It looks like black tar when I clean it out and smells really bad. This has been ongoing for about 2 yrs now. The vet never really tells me what it is, but always send me home w/ a tube of ear cream for her. I believe I've went through three different brands. My question is... is their something that's causing this that maybe she's eating. I did read somewhere that a lot of dogs get yeast infections in their ears due to a high content of grains in their dog food. I switched her over and now she's eating a lamb and rice food. Any suggestions? |
I would suggest taking her to another vet for a second opinion...SOON. It seems a little odd to me that for over two years, your vet hasnt told you what it could be, how its caused and whats gonna stop it....the fact that he keeps sending you home with a tube of cream, makes me question your vet - A LOT... JMO.... I just think thats unexceptable and would not stop until I got the right answers to my questions. And the fact that you can see it bothers her, would definately have me concerned... Please keep us posted :) |
Take her to a different vet! She probably has an infection. What brand food? What are the ingredients in it? |
When I got my second yorkie from a breeder he had black in his ears and he had to be treated for ear mites. I also had to treat my other 3 dogs as ear mites are very contagious. The medicine cleared it up though and he hasn't had any problems since. Could yours have gotten mites and is getting reinfected? |
Welcome to YT:) Please take her to another vet. No good vet will leave you without explaining what is going on. It is probably ear mites or a yeast infection. They would have to put some of the gunk under a microscope for an accurate diagnosis. Maybe they are just being lazy. Ear mites would be black but the way you explain it it sounds like a yeast infection and along with the med they could've given you cleaner. |
it sounds like ear mites, I had one of my babies just like that and I had to treat everyone else. My vet put a sample of the black stuff under microscoping and showed me , it was like hundreds of little things moving around. Yes, you need to go to a better vet and the treatment is very fast/easy 4 drops of medication on each ear once a week for 3 weeks did the work. |
ear mites sometimes floppy ears/hair inside the ear, or water getting in the ear canal after baths are the blame. |
