Question about my male yorkie pup.
 

He is 11wks old and already started humping ! is there anyways to prevent him from humping ? besides getting him neutered or will that even stop it ?? It not really bad but, i dont want it to get really bad either. any help or suggestions ???

My little male did this to my daughter about three weeks ago. I've heard that it's not sexual but dominant. As soon as he started doing it, I clapped my hands, yelled no, flipped him over on his back and made him stay there until I said he could get up ( about 10 min). I had my daughter participate in this since she was the object of his humping.

I forgot to add, my male was 12 weeks when he did this. HTH!

My female is 14 weeks old and did this to her stuffed froggie....so I don't think it is a sex thing but a dominance thing!!! Next time I will stop her and put her on her back.

It's very common..I never had to put mine on their backs, I would tell them in a firm voice no, that way they knew it would not be tolerated. My sons male puppy(he's 4 1/2 mos.) was humping my sons arm too..They will get him fixed between 5-6 mos..that's when the vets here will do it

I have the same issue with my 4 month old whose testicles have not dropped yet and has never seen the red rocket so I know it is not a sexual thing. He is definitely asserting his dominance. I was just pushing him off but his puppy class teacher said I can try putting him on his back. He actually does not do this with me that often. I think he tests the dominance waters here and there with me but knows I won't have it. He has been consistently humping my mom's arm who babysits him during the day. She tends to baby him a lot and initially thought we should get him a larger stuff doll so he can use that to hump but realizes the error when I confirmed what I knew with what the trainer said.

Don't count on him stopping when you get him fixed because like others have said before it is about dominance not sex. I have had several male dogs and the ones that were fixed tried humping things much more often than the ones that were intact.

I had mine neutered at 5 1/2 mos. he's never humped anything except my one yorkie that is going on 5..she's very submissive, and he's trying to be the dominanat one..I tell him NO and he stops..

well i dont really wanna get fim fixed b/c i want to stud him out. has any of yall ever done that ? or should i get him fixed ?

Breeding is a huge responsibility. There are so many things that must be done before you breed him. He would need health testing done by a specialist to make sure he isn't passing on any genetic defects (tests for heart, eyes, ears, liver, patellas, STDs etc for both the male and female). He should also be evaluated by a dog show judge or knowledgeable breeder to make sure he meets the standard and is of quality to breed. You should also know the lines that the male and female both come from well...sizes of the dogs in their pedigree, quality, health, free whelpers, etc. Then you're going to be responsible for someone else's dog for about a week while she is being bred. Also, if you breed your male, he will most likely always have that stud attitude...humping and marking everything in site. Breeding is a lot of work and responsiblity. It requires a lot of knowledge of the yorkie breed and genetics to do it the right way. Yorkies are being so overbred right now...so many don't even look like yorkies anymore..and so many yorkies have too many health problems.

The best option will most likely be neutering him. Many vets will neuter at 16 weeks if he is over 2lbs. I recommend neutering him as early as you can. Doing so should keep him from ever marking and should stop humping. He will also be a happier and healthier dog. You will eliminate his risk of testicular cancer and other health issues like an enlarged prostate. Intact males also have a higher risk of aggression. A male can also smell a female in heat up to a mile away and may do anything to get to her..they can be escape artists. He may escape out of your house/yard and get hit by a car trying to get to a female. He may also quit eating when a female is around.

Well i think that the best thing for me to do would be just to neuter him.

So you think the sooner the better on the neutering ?

A lot of vets are neutering really early now...and some still like to wait until 6 months. If I get a male puppy one day, I'll have him neutered by 16weeks. I think the earlier the better...before unwanted behaviors start like marking, leg-lifting, excessive humping, aggression, etc.

Once you stud them out, they will ALWAYS mark, and he will have to be in belly bands or caged the rest of his life..My sister used hers for stud, and he would mark everywhere and anywhere after that, so had to keep belly bands on him..

I don't know how it is in Texas, but, the vets around here, do like to wait with yorkies being so small until at least 5 mos. and also they want to make sure the testicles have dropped. If there is a lot of problems with humping, and the puppy is bigger, they will do it sooner, but, they still prefer to wait until the pup is at least close to 5 mos.
