What kind of coat...
 

would you say Autumn Rose has? I thought I posted this and I guess it must have been when my computer froze and distracted me. She is very fluffy and soft. I call her my Plush Puppy. She looks big but when you pick her up your arms sink and sink into her hair. She has a rather long body and long legs and she's mostly hair. She doesn't mat and I can go for days without brushing her. Can anyone tell anything from these pictures? Sylvia

I am no professional, but I can tell you what her coat is by something I learned on this Forum (plus the way she looks). She has a cottony coat. If her eyes glow red in a photo she has a cottony coat; if they glow green,she has a silky coat. I have to say, she does have a lot of hair and is beautiful! I bet if you put that Chris Christensen Ice on Ice on her she'd look like a show girl!!!!

I would have to say that it looks like a cottony coat too.

As a photographer, I know that lighting can make or break a photo. I have yet to be convinced that lighting, that affects every other color turnout in a photo, can be "the key" that determines the texture of a dog's coat.

I'm not saying it's NOT true....I'm just saying I'm extremely skeptical to believe that, given my career in journalism and photography.

I also know that when a yorkie's coat is not brushed...it just looks like a mess, whether or not it's cottony or silky. Some days I'm convinced that Sully's coat is cottony, by some aspects of it, but after his bath and brushing, his coat just shines and glows and looks so slick and nice!

All of this to say: I don't know! LOL. I think I'd have to see her in person...but then again, I am no expert - I dont even know what my own yorkie's coat is! (Is it possible to be some of both?)

I thought if the coat doesn't mat easy it was a silk coat. Chachi has a cotton coat and it mats pretty easily. Jewels has a silk coat and I never have to brush her.

I'm with Chachi's mom on this. I never heard of the green eye/red eye theory. Since reading this I have taken lots of pics of my babies to see what color reflects and if at different angles it will reflect a different color. So far only one color is reflected.

Mr. Big is 6 months today. Does age affect the reflecting colors? On some of his pics I just got his regular eye color, one shot got a cloudy blue and 2 shots got a reflected brilliant green. When Matty was alive I never got a reflected color and her eyes were always a cloudy blue in the photos. Lacijo, Mr. Bigs half sister, who is 8 1/2 months, eyes were either their natural brown or brilliant green. Autumn Rose will be 11 months tomorrow and her eyes used to be just the natural brown or reflect gold. Now, does the gold always turn red? Her eyes have reflected red lately. I couldn't get a reflected color from Pirogue but the last time I remember seeing one it was gold and I'm not too sure but I think that was just a couple of months ago.

Anyone else noticed the relationship between the final coat and the reflection in their babies eyes? Sylvia

I noticed I forgot Lady, her eyes reflect red, too.

I believe it was Whisper'smom who said that the pup should be at least 6 months before applying this theory but that it is accurate..Maximus' eyes are turning more GREEN in pick now that he is almost 6 months..where as they were a bluish tint or straight brown before..both his parent has silky coats so I am hoping he does..although right now his puppy coat is driving me crazy...lol

Ok, if this theory is true where does that leave a dog who on one day has red reflections and the next green reflections? Lady is 17 1/2 months old. On Thursday I took the first picture and you can see her reflection is definately red. The second pic was taken the next day, Friday, here the color is a little more difficult to see but it is definately not red. It does appear to be more gold with some green peeking thru and I'm not sure this is the right photo, but there is one where her reflection is definately green. So what does that mean? Sylvia

I don't know why, but everytime I hear that a dog has a cotten coat, I think of the hair being dry, dull and a wad mess. Then when I hear of the silky coat, I think of it being straight, flowing and shiny. When I see a well groomed Yorkie, I always think of the silky coat.

Sylvia - To me - your baby looks silky - if you can go for days without brusing her - it must be silky -she has a beautiful coat -

Chanel has a cotton coat & I have to brush Chanel everyday - and what Lady of Yorkies described is Chanel too - I can sink my face into her hair and not come out - it's very long and grew at a very young age compared to my one year old Cheri.

But with GOOD Grooming products - when she runs thru the yard - it's a beautiful site -

She DOES knot pretty easy and has a LOT of hair - so I've always considered her cotton - AND her eyes reflect red ....It's more work than a Silky Coat for sure - but worth it because when she looks good - she looks REALLY good -

If you can go a few days without brushing, and still get a brush through, the pup has a GREAT coat. I think high quality food, good shampoo and conditioner make a world of difference in their coat - whatever kind it is. Julz is right about the eye color. I read that somewhere, too - green is indicative of a silk coat. White spots on their chest, too.

I will say, if you don't stay in the habit of brushing at a particular interval and it does get matted up, you may have to shave her down. That is the bad part of a good coat.

Macie definately has a silky coat- I keep it long but even if I don't brush it for days it does not mat (thank heavens! some days it is a real job to brush her!) :cool:
Leo, on the other hand, was very soft and fluffy as a young'n with hair that would mat easily, but as he is getting older and his adult coat is coming in his hair lays down much better. Still very soft, but doesn't mat as much now.
As you can see if this picture Macie's eyes are gold and Leo's eye's are blue...
Mia's not in this picture, but her eyes are also blue like Leo's and she has a wirey, not so soft, very slow growing coat.
What does this mean to the eye color theory?
