I don't currently own a yorkie, but I would like to one day. I do have a few questions...does anyone here have a yorkie and a larger dog, and how do they get along? I would love to have a yorkie, but I am not interested in the teeny tiny ones, I think 7-8 lbs would work much better in my home. And how do I go about finding a good breeder? I would be interested in a male, pet only. I'm not interested in showing or breeding and he would be neutered. I work in the family business and he would go to work with me most days. I have 3 dogs, 2 are 60 lbs and one is 20 lbs. All are gentle. I foster kittens for my shelter and have had kittens as small as a pound running around my house and no incidences yet with the dogs being too rough, so I don't think a 7-9 lb dog would be an issue. I also have 6 cats, and could have a few kittens running around every now and then, since I foster. Everyone here gets along great. I want a male because all of my dogs are females and I believe a male dog would probably fit in a bit better. I'm looking forward to any advice you all have and a point in the right direction. I would love to rescue a yorkie as well, instead of purchasing from a breeder, but I'm not opposed to a good, reputable breeder.

If you're looking for a breeder, I would check out the YTCA website for recommendations. There are also some good breeders here on YT. There is a for sale forum. You can also attend dog shows to find reputable breeders.

I do not have a big dog but many people here do and they get along great.

I just bought my yorkie Cash. & we have a 2yr old German Shepard female also. we bring her inside during the cold weather at night and cash always goes around the corner and plays with her. she is very gental with him. Cash(my yorkie) weighs about 4lbs. and Chole (our german shepard) weighs over 100lbs. :animal-pa

Well, all of my animals live inside the house, so they would be together all evening when I am there. I don't leave my animals unsupervised together, and 2 of my dogs are crated during the day. But, my dogs are all gentle and get along great with small animals.

It sounds like you know your other dogs well and that they are gentle around the little kittens. So I'm sure your dogs will be fine with a yorkie as well. I wouldn't leave them alone together unattended just because accidents could happen, but you've already said you don't leave them out unattended when you aren't there. I'm sure you'll make a great yorkie parent!

I have a 75 lb. bulldog and a 3 lb. yorkie along with a 100 lb. lab all males and they get along great. This last weekend I just a 3 lb. female yorkie and everyone gets along great. I think you'll be fine since it sounds like they get along with your kittens, etc.
