Laser Pointer...Good or Bad? I bought Chloe a laser pointer today and thought it would be fun for her. Then when I was done playing with it she was going crazy trying to find it. I'm worried because she seemed very stressed by it just disappearing. Do you think it's unhealthy for the dogs to play with the laser pointer? |
I saw an episode of the Dog Whisperer where a dog became so obsessed with the laser pointer, she began obsessing over flickers of light through the window and such too. I don't think it is healthy psychologically, but I'm no expert. |
You probabaly know your dog better than anyone. If it seems like it is stress.... it probably is. Maybe try playing fetch instead? |
I had a laser pointer a while back it didnt bother them but i didnt use it that much the dogs loved it and so did the cats i dont think there is harm in it if you are not playing with them with it all the time maybe a day or too here and there and just for a short time. |
I agree that you know your own pets. I suggest you follow your feelings about this one. My husband has one that he plays with Gizmo with from time to time. He has problems with his back and hips, so this is how they play on days when he is in pain. It's not all of the time...maybe once or twice a week, and we haven't seen anything to be concerned about. :) Be careful not to shine it in anyone's eyes though. |
I don't think it's too healthy because we had a Cavalier that would chase the light of a flashlight on the floor and a laser pointer and he became obsessed with chasing lights. He would bump into the walls, floor to try to catch the light. Even when we took him for car rides he would try to catch the sunlight that passed thru. |
Pinky likes playing with the laser and my other two are not very interested. Here is an interesting article on the safety of different lasers. http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2005-rst/2800.html |
I heard that some dogs (and cats too) can become obsessed with the laser lights. After you put the light away, the dog will search and search for the light. I heard the best thing to do is to have a beginning and an end to the light, so that the dog doesn't think the light "disappeared" and they go searching for it. Turn the light on at the same place every time (like a specific corner) with a cue like "hello light". When the play session is done, the last place to point the light is the same place where the light first appeared. This will prevent the dog to go searching for the light. Also use a cue when the play session is over, like "Bye Bye light". |
Our cats love the laser pointer but the dogs could care less about it, now give them a ball and they go nuts! |
