Fleas When we got back from a trip and I picked up my Yorkies, they had fleas (big time). This was Nov. 23. I put the Frontline Plus on them right away and they were fine. Now, they are back. I don't think I can use Frontline this soon. Do you all have any ideas of what I can do for them? Lucy is 5 lbs. and Monkey is 2. |
Wash them with dawn dishsoap. It will kill the fleas |
Thanks. I will. |
have you done anything to get rid of them from your house? You might need to bomb your house. While that may be difficult at this time of year - I would at least by a spray that you can use on carpet and furniture to kill fleas & eggs. Also, I use electronic devices that plug in & are suppose to scare off fleas. Some people have missed results with these. Well, I believe they work -- it takes a few days. I had some I bought yrs ago, that really worked, so I went on a hunt for newer models. I bought an electronic thing at Ace Hardware that said it got rid of mice & pests - but when I called the company to ask about ridding fleas, their standard response was it hadn't been tested on fleas. But I kept it anyway & I think it's working. This is their website - I got the 2000 model http://www.global-instruments.com/prod_pc.htm I think I paid like somewhere between $26-$29 for one I thought about getting one from this website http://www.electronicpestrepeller.com/flea_control.htm it looks good - but I didn't want to wait for it to ship I have also bought black & decker models - they sell those at Target (couldn't find any at walmart) These come in single, double & triple packs. I got a double pack - I think it was like $15 -- but I almost feel like one of the companies that specializes in these things is the way to go instead of B&D - but really I have no complaint with the ones I bought They all seem to say they may or may not work for each individual & if you have a bigger space you need more of them - like potentially in every room - well I think rooms that have furniture & carpet where fleas reside when not on something breathing. Also, if you search online there are holistic/natural ways to get rid of fleas - I think one is giving the dogs a lemon bath -- I haven't tried any of those - that would have been my next step if the electronic devices didn't work. With the electronic devices, I figure keeping mice, etc. out of the house is a plus too. Just be careful as they can't be used around hamsters, guinea pigs, other rodent type pets. |
I don't know if this is accurate or not. My vet told me we don't really need to bombthe house. he said fleas can only live if they have a host (which is the dog) and can't live long at all on other areas, like carpets becasue they are parasites. I used Advantage everymonth and he hasn't gotten them back. Its been three months now. |

Actually, more fleas are found in carpets than on your pets: In a typical room, 5 percent of the fleas will be found on pets, 10 percent flea cocoons in the carpets, 35 percent flea larvae and 50 percent flea eggs, again in the carpets. http://www.stopthefleas.com/flea-fac...formation.html You have to treat the carpets of you have a flea infestation as the topical will only kill the fleas that jump on the dog, not the ones hatching in the carpet. |
