newbie ! rescued dori, she is not feeling well hi everyone, well after months of searching we adopted out 4-6 year old Dori from the human society. she is georgeous. she has a horrible cough, like a seal, or a squeeze box. brought her to the vet, and was diagnosed with kennel cough, this is day two of antibiotics. and cough suppressant. she has only eaten one meal since living here for 48 hours. so i'm concerned about the hunger strike, any suggestions on what to do about that will be more than welcomed, and how long i should let that go on before calling the vet again. Dori is very over weight, the vet wants her to loose 3 lbs, so i'm not too worried about her being to frail. any any any suggestions are more than welcomed. thanks a very excited new mom ! |
Welcome to YT! I am experiencing the same situation with Harley. He had to be re-homed and with the help of wonderful YT members he found a home with me. Harley arrived Thursday night, and basically didn't eat for almost 2 days also. I think alot of it had to do with the stress of a new place. He has started to nibble on food and take treats, so I would give it some time. Just make sure she is drinking water, so she doesn't get dehydrated. |
Welcome to YT!! So glad to have you & Dori here! Are you feeding her the same type of food she was eating before she came to you? If not, that might be the issue. Have you tried other foods? You might offer her some cottage cheese, or boiled chicken and some rice. A lot of times the adjustment to a new environment can be difficult and that may be why she is not eating. She may need more time to adjust. Can't wait to see picture of her. How old is she? |
they said she is six years old, the vet said more likely 4 years old. i'll try and post a picture. she is so cute. and sweet. |

She sounds wonderful. How wonderful of you to give her a forever home! |
How nice of you to rescue her. It could be a combination of the cough and the new environment that keeping her from eating a lot. Give her some time to get well, and get use to you. |
:Yorkietal Welcome to you and Dori :yorkietal I am so very glad that you found your baby and YorkieTalk. Can't wait to see pictures..... I have never had a case of kennel cough (thank goodness and knock on wood), but it is my understanding that this illness will zap a furkid of their appetite. With the Kennel Cough added to coming into a new environment, it may take some extra special TLC to coax the her into eating. Good luck and keep us posted! |
Welcome to yt, congrats on your new babie:) what a kind thing do, Iam sure its a adjustment phase for her, Cant wait for pics:) hope it gets better. |
Welcome to YT to you and Dori, I am sure you will love it here on YT. I sure do, lots of great people with great information. I think your baby just needs to adapt. It takes time with an older dog, but soon she will be loving you so much you will feel she has been with you forever. good luck to you and your precious little girl. pooh's mum |
You know, I just now remembered this..when my baby got kennel cough almost 5 years ago(she was a puppy), anyway, the vet told me to give her cold things(yes, even a little vanilla ice cream) to help with the cough..ice cubes(crushed), anything cold, which I did, and that seemed to help out a lot with the cough |
Good for you..I love stories like this.... In the mean time you might consider boiling a chicken breast and rice for her (I did mine in salt-less chicken stock). Even if she is overweight it is important she eat for her recovery period. You will have plenty of time to work on her weight issues. She has been through a lot and has changed at least 3 places lately so she is a little frightened and very unsure what is happening to her. Many times they will be picky eaters and you probably don't know what she ate at her original owners home so she just might not like what you are trying to feed her. My guess is it was not a good food quality based on her weight or they feed her anything she wanted. Time, patience and love will turn her around and I know you are up for the challenge or you wouldn't have taken on a rescue. |
Generally Kennel cough just has to run it's course just like our own colds. I would get some Nutri-Cal and give her some a couple times a day, and even if you have to buy a nice steak, try anything really good to entice her to eat. When a puppy or adult dog comes into a different home to live, they are a bit traumatized and eating takes a back seat. The Nutri-Cal will give her the vitamins and energy she needs and will peak her appitite. Keep us up on her progress. |
kennel cough really can slam these little ones hard and takes a while to get rid of. One of mine had it and it took forever and a couple of changes of antibiotics to get him over it. She is new to your home and probably feels a little strange (once she gets used to you and realizes how much better life is than at the humane society she will start to warm up) Just be carefull she doesn't get hypoglycemia-a little Nutracal or karo syrup on her gums. Also, sometimes the antibiotics upset their little bellies and make them feel nausous or vomit. Just hang in there, it will be like she has been there with you forever in no time flat. |
