Please tell me stories about yorkies and children Do you have children? How old are they? Is your yorkie a real family type dog or does he/she gravitate to you instead of the kids? I have 3 girls 12, 10 and 5. I'm not really worried about them being too rough with a puppy because they're old enough to understand and to treat it well...what I'm worried about is whether a yorkie is the best dog for them. If any of you have children could you please tell me how your yorkie gets along with them. I've been looking for a puppy for a while (our pom died of old age just last summer :( and we really need another dog) and to be honest I wasn't quite sure *what* breed we should get. Once I started seriously looking it seemed like we were always gravitating towards puppies that looked like yorkies. Just last week I found the most adorable purebred yorkie. Her mom is about 10lbs and her dad is about 5 lbs so she's not going to be teeny tiny or anything. I can have her next Friday and I'm really excited but there's that small part of me that's wondering if I've picked the best dog for the kids. I want her to be their dog as much as my dog. |
My daughter is 6 my yorkie is 3 1/2 pds no problems but only you know what your kids can handle also if you play ruff with my daughter nicki myytorkie will bite, even me |
I have a 2 yr old lil boy and a 8 week yorkie....and they are best friends....my son is so good....for the most part....but se is so good with him! |
I don't have any kids, but after trying to find homes for my little yorkie puppies I would have to say that you really need to be very careful with a yorkie around your 5 year old. I would be a bit leary with giving someone a puppy with a 5 year old around. Yorkies are great dogs, but until they are grown up and learn the ropes of being tiny little things that they are I would be really careful with your little girl and the new puppy together. Yorkies are great with kids if they are raised around them. Just like anyother type of dog. They are wonderful and you will fall in love with the breed really fast. They will do anything to protect you and your family. I raised mine in a nursing home and she was really protective of the people that I took care of, plus she was so gentle with all of them even when they would pull her hair and stuff. They just have to get use to it. Good luck making the decision to add a wonderful yorkie to your life. |
Thank you...and like I said I'm not hugely worried about how they will treat the puppy. I'll definately watch my 5yo around her but I think she'll be pretty gentle. We had a pom for years and she wasnt rough with him or anything. The thing I'm most worried about is her being a "whole family" dog. BTW Sharonandtink that yorkie you have in your sig...the one with the bow in her hair, is gorgeous! Her hair looks so silky and soft. |
This is my experience and mine alone. My grandkids ages 4 and 7 have been raised around my yorkies. They are good kids and kind. BUT, the only time they are allowed to be in with yorkies is when they are sitting still on the floor or the couch and I am in the room. I watched my granddaughter, stumble and fall with a puppy in her arms. I kind of caught her and she didn't fall on the puppy. Needless to say, she was put in time out even tho it wasn't really her fault except the getting up and walking with the puppy when she was supposed to be still. Also, about a year or so ago, someone posted on here that the same thing happened with their two year old and the puppy died. So for people to think that just because their kids have been raised or are good with the dogs and won't hurt it is just unrealistic. Kids have accidents BUT so do adults. I think probably your older children would be alright but you would have to be very careful with the five year old. |
My sisters yorkie Zippy HATES kids! He didn't allways until some kid tormented him while he was in his crate. Since then my nephews do it also, so he just has it out for kids. Chip is great with kids, he can't get enough of them. Harley I'm not sure yet since I just got him, but his foster mom says he is. |
I have a 2yr old grandson that has been rasied around my 4, I have not had any problems, He is not allowed to pick them up of course, I get on the floor with them all and let them play with supervision:) |
I have a four year old and a fourteen week old yorkie. I never leave my daughter alone with him, but they are great together when I'm with them. They will sit on the couch forever watching cartoons together. I think as long as the puppy is raised around children and as long as they don't tease the pup or play too rough, it will grow up to be wonderful around kids. As far as him being a family dog, I can't say yet. But in the mornings, he loves to lick my husband and my daughter awake. He does tend to want to be with me more, but I'm the one who takes care of him and is with him the most. I think if you can get your children to participate as much as possible in raising the pup, he/she will make a great family pet! |
max Max is very good with children he loves my nefew who is know 1. If Max has something he should not he will not give it up to any one but hell let vincent take it with out any problem when my nefew gets ruff Max just leaves him alone .W hen hes sleeping Max waites at the bedroom door for him to get up or keeps a very close listen for when he does. All Dogs and All Kids Are Different I have Three Yorkies two I have had for almost 6 years and my Daughter is 9 so we got them when she was three. She now has her own Yorkie. (Pixie) All three Yorkies are different. Daisy is a Diva Princess and likes mommy (me). Kodi Is a Mama's Boy But Loves to play and be ruff housed with. And Pixie Well she as the hubby Puts it is a TOM BOY LOL. They all Love Bre and Know her well. Sabrina has grown up around Yorkies so I trust her and have for a long time. But I would have to evaluate each kid on a one to one basis BTW Welcome to YT :) |
I have 2 furbabies & 3 grandkids a 4 year old grandson a1 year old grandson & a 1 year old granddaughter. My furbabies r Rowdy 6 months & Bella 5 months. Rowdy was 7 wks & Bella 6 wks old when i got them so they have grown up around my skin babies. You do have to watch & make sure the kids don't hurt them boys r somewhat ruffer than girls on the puppies but I'll tell u what my furbabies just love & adore my grandkids even though my oldest grandson can be ruff & we all know how babies can be with puppies. I watch my grandkids while the parents work & the furbabies greet them at the door with wags & kisses every morning! :animal-pa |
I have a 4 year old grandson, and he does very well with my yorkies. He knows he has to be sitting down to pet them, and if he doesn't do it gently or trys to pick them up then for the rest of the day he's not aloud to play with them. So far it's worked out really well for us. |
Thank you for all your answers. I'm torn right now I guess, and have to sit down and really think about this. I guess what I really want is a dog that can and will be their friend. One that they can play with and just really enjoy (I don't mean rough housing so much because like I said they're all getting older, but one they can take for a walk or just sit and cuddle with, or play nicely with) I got my pom before I had kids and while he loved them he was definately *my* dog...he didn't even want to go for a walk with them unless I came. I don't want that to happen again, I want our next dog to be a family dog. |
I've got 2 kids 15 and 11 and Buddy adores them, he loves to play with them, go for walks or just sit and cuddle with them. He tends to have preferences as to who he goes to depending on what mood he's in, as in 'mad chasing around' etc he will normally pester my son (11). Walks tend to be my daughter (15) love and cuddles are more for me but he's pretty much open to a cuddle with whoever looks the snuggliest! :) Buddy is a chunk tho at 15lbs so we don't have any real treading on or dropping issues. :) |
