New baby coming....Help! I have a one and a half year old boy yorkie..Chewy, and now we are getting a little sister for him! Sadie! We are scared he will not like her... I know at first he may not be thrilled...she will be small and won't be able to play rough... but over time will he still be the sweet lap dog and lover he is now??? I don't want to mess up my boy by getting him a sister but I thought he might like a play mate. We are very excited. Any help on how to deal with things in the beginning????? HELP!:confuse2: |
First, introduce them on neutral territory. He should warm up to her but there is never a guarantee. As long as he has never shown dog aggression, everything should be fine. Congrats:) |
I know it's hard not to pay all your attention to your new one, but your better off paying more attention to the pup you already have, so he doesn't feel left out. It always takes some time for them to find out who's going to be the alpha. It will take some time, but you can get them to get along. |
I'm getting a new puppy tomorrow and I'm also scared. What a fellow YTer suggested what have them meet on neutral ground like Ellie May said then put your new pup in her ex-pen and let your other dog sniff her and meet that way with a wall in between them. Pay a TON of attention to your other dog while this is going on. Then after Chewy settles down and seems to be ignoring the fact that she is there, let her out. Thats my plan for tomorrow at least...we'll just have to see. |
I think if you slowly introduce them, they should be fine. When they are together, you should be right there to correct him if hes to rough or trying to dominate her. I think they should be just fine... Congrats on your new baby :) |
In the past, we got a puppy -Molly-and had a year old yorkie-Scrunchy. At first he would snarl and growl when the pup would try to play or get close to him. I was worried and even called the breeder for advice, she told me to give it a month. It honestly took about 3 1/2 weeks before he started to give in and become friends. They become best friends sleeping and playing together until he passed away. My best advice is to be patient and give it time if it is not an instant connection. Good luck with your new baby. |
Maddie was really ticked off at me when I got Libby. She wouldn't look at me...if I'd hold her in front of my face, she's turn her head away. She sometimes gets attitude. LOL I just gave her lots of attention and kisses and I was also worried that she wouldn't stay my baby...but...in only a few days time, Maddie was playing with Libby and interested in what Libby was doing. Don't worry if it isn't an instant bond, as many times it won't be. It won't take long before Chewy is loving your little Sadie! Congrats on getting your new baby! |
good luck and congrats:) |
