Yorkies nails hi everyone. I am scared to cut Sammy's nails. That's because I did once and i must have pinched him because he shrieked and I let go andhe ran away from me. So how do you guys do it, or how often do you take them to get cut. I just noticed that one of them on the back leg on his extra paw pad they don't use is curved like a cirlce. I didn't notice this before and I wanted to know if its dangerous. I tried filing his nails instead but he won't stay still and I'm afraid to hurt him. Someone told me that dogs eventually take care of the nails themselves??? Some help please. Thanks |
That back nail definitely needs cutting. You can run into problems when it curls like that. Lulu hated having her nails cut but I kept at it. What I do is after her bath I wrap her in the towel and take out a paw at a time and cut her nails. I like to do it after her bath because the nail is a bit softer. It's scary to cut their nails because it's so dark. But what I do is use a good cutter and I just take a nip at the end...maybe an eight of an inch. For this time I would take him to the groomer or vet to get them cut. That way it can get cut down nice and to a comfy level for you. I cut Lulu's nails every week when I bathe her that way it stays fairly short. Their nails will grind down naturally if you walk them alot. |

Their nails will have to be clipped on the average of 4 to 6 weeks.....what you described as the curved nail is the dew claw...it too must be clipped or it can grow into the leg. keep it short or it can get caught up in stuff. As far the nails taking care of themselves...well unless you know a trick on how to train them on how to use an emory board and if you do, please let me know.... All kidding aside, how old is the puppy if he's a pup....put him on his back, rub his tummy and his paws then sneak in the clipper. |
Have a groomer or vet cut them for you and show you how to trim them from now on |
I also have problems cutting London's nails. Her nails grow super fast and she has the dew claws also. I was able to cut one but the other i didn't get to cause she kept squirming so im waiting for my bf to help me hold her cause i cant do it alone. Also what i do is put it next to a light so i can see through the nail and see where the vessel starts so i don't make her bleed |

i do it myself mind you i have never cut coco or niped the quick im very very careful though it takes forever to do her nails but boy does coco put up a fight she bites me soooooo hard and has made me bleed several times:( but the groomer wont do it ever since coco bite her... coco has really bad anxiety so just seeing anything metal in my hand or anything in my hand heading for her paws will cause her to attack lol its sooo horrible i hate it!!! but some one has to do it so i just gotta put up with her biteing and cut her nails then i take her for a nice long walk and they get filed down with the sidewalk i have tried playing with her paws and rubbing her tummy but even touching her paws she gets nervous and runs away from me i need serious help with her :eek: |
I had my breeder/groomer show me how to trim their nails so you take a little bit off at a time. She said that if you cut a little bit of the nail on one day you can cut them again 3 days later because the vessel will receed. I tried to make sure when I got my pups to play with their feet often so they are used to me touching their feet. You can't give into their yelping either, my Xena yelps everytime I cut a nail and I have never made her bleed, she's just a drama queen and hopes if she yelps I will stop. :rolleyes: |
He's 9 months next week. What can I say? I've never had a dog before and I thought I hurt him that day, I'll have to take him to get his nails cut. Now I know Quote:

The groomer wont' hurt him....they know what they are doing. Get a groomer that comes highly recommended. Lulu is getting used to it...she has no choice. I think the best way to keep them still is to wrap them in a blanket. Works for me. |
I use a dremmel on all 7 of my dogs. I grind a little at a time and do it once a week. because they are use to it they don't mind at all. I have leather counches and by grinding the nails they stay nicely rounded and never dig into anything. |

I used to have lots of problems with this...Ittybit would try to get away from me. I started doing it while she was still in the sink for a bath...I usually put the conditioner on her then cut her nails then rinse her off. She stands really still while getting a bath lol. |
