Help, Male or Female??
 

I'm curious what everyones thoughts are on the different personality traits between male and female yorkies?

One more loving and affectionate than the other? One more moody than the other? One more energetic than the other? Or is there no real difference, it all depends on the specific dog.

Do males tend to 'mark their territory' a lot? I really don't like when males are constantly lifting their leg. With an early neutering stop this?

I'm set on a female, probably because thats what my family has always had, but i want to make sure she is affectionate. Ive heard that some males tend to be more loving. Is this true?

Males do mark but my female marks at places like the petstore too. Early neutering could stop this.

I prefer females in the Yorkie breed because they usually are the "queen" type. Yorkies are a matriarchal breed and females won't let you forget it. On the other hand, I hear that males are very affection and they do make wonderful pets.

I like the little men the best. They seem to be more affectionate to me. As far as marking you can stop this by using belly bands until they are neutered. If I was ever to get another it would be another little boy.

I have 2 males....They are very loving and affectionate....One is a total mush ball.....

My daughter has a female.....She is loving but on her terms only....She also has that Diva attitude.....Where as , my boys are more " Go with the Flow" attitudes....If that makes any sense???.

So I think it is all in what you are looking for...

How do those belly bands work? Anybody know?

Out of the 4 girls and 1 boy we have, the boy is the most affectionate. But they all have different personalities.

Belly bands have become my best friend...lol They are strips of fabric w/ velcro on them....You take a female sanitary pad and stick it inside the band....Then place the band around the waist be sure to cover his Willy....If the boys have an accident, the pee is absorbed into the sanitary pad....I get my pads at the DollarTree...16 in a pkg for $1...The boys do not even mind them...When I remove the pads, if they have had an accident, I use a baby wipe or wet paper towel to clean the area so they do not smell of pee....

I do not own a yorkie yet but I have researched around and found out that males are the best choice for us. Our little furbaby is coming in 17 days!

Question(s).. is this something you have to keep on them 24/7 and about how long does it take until they become trained? What age to you start this type of training, when they are very young?

After they are trained, does it men they will always squat to pee?

Also, about what age should I neuter a male to hopefully stop the leg lifting before it starts?

My female is definitely top dog in this house. My one male is a follow the leader type and easy going. Our rescue little guy just goes with the flow. My boys are cry babies. Certainly have their own personalties. It makes it fun around here. When I leave I always tell Samantha she's in charge and I really think she takes it heart. Male or female, gotta love em!:animal-pa

This was very interesting reading. I've had four males so far and never a female, so I've always wondered about the differences.

I have to admit being partial to males though. My boys are total 'mama's boys' and very sweet. :love:

HI....I do not keep the bands on the 24/7.....In the beginning, They would be penned in the kitchen...I have ceramic tile there...Put baby gates up at each entrance...Had pee pads down for them to use....When I let them out of the kitchen, they had a band on....I would take them back to the pad every hour in case they needed to pee....I have pretty much figured out their bodies...So I kinda know when they need to pee....We have good weeks and bad weeks....But they are only 8-9 months old now....So I do not expect perfection....:rolleyes: I started to let them go with out bands...Thinking they got it down....But I went to clean my formal dining room and discovered they did not have it down......So we wear bands whenever loose now...They let me know when they need to go and I will go to the kitchen and remove bands and they do their thing....

I had them neutered at 6 months...Was going to do it earlier but wanted them to gain a little weight first....They squat-do not hike a leg...Do not know if this is cuz of bands or neuter or what...But works for me...They have never marked...:D Our vet recommended neuter at 4 months....But I held off 2 more months...

I love them both and I've always had at least 1 boy 1 girl of every type of animal & breed. All the boys have been much mellower, go with the flow, kissy face lovers. All my females are in charge but still loving, but more independent. Good luck finding the best furbaby for your household

I have both a male and a female.
They both have their advantages and disadvantages, and it also depends on what you classify as an advantage ;)

My little Pixie is absolutely the queen of the household. She has a very strong bond with me, follows me EVERYWHERE, no matter where I go - even to the bathroom to pee. She gets aggressive with the other dogs sometimes, even though she's the smallest, she wants them to know that it's HER food or water... and she gets touchy in bed. She likes to sleep under the covers at my tummy, and if someone steps on her because they can't see her or something, you hear this GRRRRRR! She is a little doll too though.

My Bogey is an adult that we took in earlier this year. He is so very loving and affectionate. He is very smart, and he tries very hard to please. We tease that he has a licking fetish: it's not a big heavy slobbery type, but rather a very slow, tender, affectionate type lick. He graduated Validogtorian from training, and he has a new job that he will be starting in January. He will be the new pet therapist at the nursing home by our house. He is absolutely the perfect dog ever for the job.
He does tend to hike his leg, but he has learned when that's appropriate (taking walks) and when it's not (in the house). He is not fixed and tends to hump on his friends when he is excited, but if you were to fix a male, I doubt this would be an issue.

I would not trade either of my babies for anything, but I have to say, I think Bogey is by far the best dog.... even if he does get a little fresh with his doggy-friends. We got Pixie first because I'd always heard that female dogs were "better"... but that's not necessarily the case. :D I would certainly go male!
