Grooming problems My yorkie doesn't like to be groomed. He does just ok with brushing but that's it. And even that depends on his mood. What can I do to help him get more comfortable? |
We share this problem. Delilah recently decided she doesn't like being groomed. I think it is her way of "acting out" over my new Maltese. I'm spending a lot of cuddle and private time with Deli, using the brush or carder as little as possible. Hope someone else has other ideas. |
grooming problems 2 Attachment(s) I have a Bichon who doesn't like being groomed. She goes to the groomer every 4 weeks and gets along OK, but I have to keep her combed out between groomings. Her groomer says she does fine, even gives kisses sometimes, but she obviously would rather be somewhere else. I put up the card table with a bath mat on it for comfortable footing. I sit on the couch and put Lacy on the card table and just talk to her and give her a treat or two and make it a love fest. I take my time combing her out, giving ear scratchies, tummy rubs, and general petting as I go. I talk to her constantly, give her kisses, and tell her what a good girl she is. Lacy is 10 years old and will never like being groomed, but she tolerates it and prances around all proud of herself when she's done. The secret is taking my time and making it comfortable for her, if not really fun. No pulling, moving slowly, talking and talking, praising, and maybe singing her a song. (The groomer does the same thing, without the song.) My beautiful Lacy is worth the effort! My Cosmo, on the other hand, loves any kind of attention, including grooming, and sits beside me while I'm grooming Lacy, whining, wanting his turn in the spotlight! First pic is Lacy, second one is Cosmo. |
I am in the same boat Jolie is now biting at the brush ... Jax is fine .... I will try the sweet talk and treats sounds like it is a good idea... I have telling her she is a good girl but she hates it... |
Gracie wouldn't bite the brush but would squirm and try to get down and would get hurt the way she struggled, this was when I first got her, now when I put her on her back she squirms a bit but then stops. All I did, and this may seem a bit harsh but it worked, everytime I would groom her and she would go crazy sqirming I would scruff her and as she's slightly hanging I would brush her, I'd do that for about a few seconds, put her down, she'd be calm for a minute and when she wiggled again I'd scruff her again. I'd tried the bribing and the kisses and treats and such and it didn't work, scruffing her did. to get her to lay on her back I would put my hand on her and hold her there till she stopped wiggling, if she didn't stop then she'd be scruffed again. |
All 3 of mine Love it! I have 3 Yorkies, 1 male has a full long coat, he gets brushed twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. I braid his Tail, and he wears a topknot all day. Both of my Females have long full coats too, but they have trimmed bangs. I trained them to like being "Brushed" by sitting on the Sofa, and brushing, then massaging or petting them so they associate getting Brushed with Relaxing and they end up enjoying it, instead of stressing out? I turn the TV. on, and they get their Toys out too! They are also Trained to accept being touched every where, so when they get examined or touched by other Groomers or at the Vets. they do not flinch/or jump by another Humans touch. Plus they know that when I Groom them in the morning that we are leaving the House to "GO BYE", I also Brush their Teeth and wash their eyes out with a wash cloth to clean their tear stains daily. When I brush them in the evening they know it's "Time to go to Sleep". It's all a Routine, generally around the same time every day and night. I used to have a hard time but I refused to tolerate any kind of stress generated by them, I took a different outlook......I only want them to generate positive emotions in me, I don't even like to yell/scold them for anything so I don't, but I don't let them set the tone or mood for what we are going to do? They know and accept that they are mine and belong to me, since my BF. has nothing to do with them. Sorry this post is so long I just wanted every one to know that it is possible to "Enjoy" the Grooming process. |
I wish mine would enjoy it:) They let everyone touch any part of them and they lay still now but I had tried for almost two months every day of treats and soothing and talking and petting and all the stuff normal dogs love and Gracie would have none of it. |
