how hard do you swat on the nose? The boys have had TWO accidents today on the bed  I took them out and yet they still went on the bed. That angers me so much. I know they know better. I usually have a routine I use. I yell "NO!", then bring them back to the pee spot again, swat their nose, yell "NO!" again, put them outside, and then to their crate for a while. I'm just not sure how hard to swat their nose. Sometimes I think I don't do it hard enough and it doesn't get the point across. Today I did it so hard he yelped though, so it was probably too hard. |
I never swat on the nose so I dunno. Its too hard if he yelped. |
Personally I don't think it is necessary to ever hit or swat a dog. I just don't think it helps with training. It teaches them to hide from you when they have to go. Plus, often times you see dogs who are hit by their owners and they fear and jump at their owner's hands. I think the best approach is a firm "no", and take him right out to the pee spot. If you feel the need, also give them a time out in the crate. Remember, if he peed on your bed twice in one day, you you made a mistake. It was his accident, but your mistake. You should learn his signal for when he is about to pee (circling, sniffing, etc.) and watch for them. The easiest way to potty train is to take them out before they have a chance to go in te house. |
I never swatted mine on the nose so I wouldnt know. I potty trained with treats as rewards and letting them know I wasnt happy when there were accidents. I would be afraid swatting would make them fearful |
I have never swatted mine and never would. Puppies are going to have accidents. If they have accidents in the bed and that makes you mad, don't allow them in the bed until they are totally trained. |
pups BELLY BANDS, BELLY BANDS AND MORE BELLY BANDS.....do you puppies are big favors and get them BELLY BANDS, it will prevent your from getting anger when they pee on the bed..and they are going to do it a lot once they have devolped the habit..stop the smell! |
I would never swat mine of the nose. I say NO in a loud firm voice. |
I NEVER SWATTED BUT I DO TAP..WHICH MEANS JUST LAY A FINGER ON HER NOSE TO GET HER ATTENTION. SHE HAS SELECTIVE HEARING..LOL WORKS FOR ME:p |

I would def NOT do that especially if you made him cry - there's other options and it's up to us to control our anger - being physical with a dog is never the way to go and won't help training at all - Poor guy - The sound of your voice sometimes is plenty to show them what they did is a no-no - If you have young puppies - you should already know accidents happen - and also - even though I never crate trained - if you use the crates for sleeping and a safe zone - you shouldn't punish them by putting them in a crate - |
I would never swat Murfee on the nose....or any place else for that matter. I tell him no very firmly. He was not a problem to potty train. I would tell him no and take him outside. Also as someone else said, learn their signals. |
thank you all...I would never hit any where on the dog....but I would put a finger on the nose gently to get some attention. but treats are the best training technique Tina |

I've never spanked my babies, so I can't help ya'.... but I'd agree that if the little guy is crying from a swat, it's TOO HARD... I'm not a fan of swatting.... maybe try a spray bottle... |
Don't ever discipline in anger. Same with children. Have a plan of correction. Mine respond to a stern "UhUHHHH". Sort of in a low growly tone. If they continue, I clap and and vocalize my displeasure again. Never, never hit a dog. It only serves to make them head/hand shy. If you have an exceptionally tough little soul to deal with, keep a flyswatter within vision. When misbehavior happens (not usually wee wee accidents, more like fighting, or violence) a quick slap on the wall with the flyswatter will stop them in their tracks. They will learn to stop barking or fighting or misbehaving when they see you reach for that flyswatter. My 2 cents. Joy |
I didn't swat mine on the nose. If I caught them in the act I'd say 'agh-agh-agh' and that would catch their attention enough to stop and then I'd put them on their pad to finish. If I saw the spot after the fact I'd say 'aww, who peed/pooped here?' with big disappointment in my voice. They learned very quickly that going on the pad meant they'd get a treat and that going anywhere else made me v-e-r-y sad:) |
My Dallas has NEVER been hit by anyone in this house and he's over a year old now. He's very hand shy (until you pick him up and it's nothing but kisses) and has been since I brought him home. I wonder what else makes them hand shy. He's never gotten more than a fussing from me or anyone else in the house. |

I believe a dog has a highly sensitive nose, so just imagine how intense a tap can be to the pup. When Zander was in training, and had an accident, I would sternly say, pipi outside Zander, pipi outside!!!, and take him outside and point to the grass and repeat the words, pipi outside. I would leave him outside for about 5 minutes, fenced in backyard, if you don't have a fenced in yard bring him back inside and perhaps put him in the crate. I would also keep his leash connected to me to keep an eye on him. The key to potty training is give the deed a name, then when he does the deed repeat the name you've given the deed and reward immediately say good boy, pipi outside, do this several times in one day and he'll be on his way to good improvements. Another thing that helps is I place a bell on the back door, you have to teach them what it is for of course and treats speed it up, so if I'm in the kitchen I can now hear the bell and let them out. Cheerios make a great treat, it can be a tiny morsel of something. It gets them trained faster, with a lot of positive encouragement. I would also set timers to remind me when to take him outside, if they drink a lot then go play rough, they will need to be taken out when they are done, this to depends on the age. The younger they are the more frequently they need to go out, they can hold it longer if they are older. When you have two, they learn faster from each other. Good luck. |
I don't swat..at all..ever. |

I don't swat but I do bang my head against the wall alot:rolleyes: . Never, ever, would i do Inything to hurt an animal. I can't even swat a fly:eek: - I stun them then throw them outside. |
Dont ever swat a dog on the nose, their nose is highly sensitive. Patience and lots of patience will get you thru. Swatting them will only bring more issues to deal with. You can make him fear you, which is terrible! Or make him mean or hurt him. Deana |

I agree with the "NO Swatters". A swat on the nose is only going to make them fearful of you. If you catch them in the act, a loud noise, saying NO, clapping your hands, stomping a foot, whatever, should give them a fright. But swatting them, after the fact, is too late. You absolutely have to catch them in the act. If you are close enough to correct with your hand, just a sudden touch will do. It does not have to be painful to them, just has to startle them. |

I know it is hard to believe, but No they really do not know better. they might know that you are going to yell and punish them, but they don't know why. Somehow you are not communicating with them. You just have to keep trying until you find a way to get the message across, and the best way to do that is to catch them in the act. Which means keeping them in your site. |
I couldn't swat my babies :( |
hummmmmmmmmmmmmm, have you guys noticed the OP hasn't been back? |
Swats And Spanking Forbidden In My Book. No dog should ever be swatted or smacked, this should never happen. You also mentioned that they are kept in x pens during the day, do they use the pee pads there? I put panties on our girls when they are running about in the house,( we are home all the time ) I place them in the play yard quite frequently with the pee pad, when they go I praise them put their panties back on and they are free to run again. Ours don't wet the panties as they don't like that against themselves. PLEASE DON'T SWAT ON THE NOSE OR ANYPLACE, they learn by our having lots of patience and training, topped with lots of TLC Patti and Jack |
