For those of you WITHOUT a fence... How do you take your furkids outside to potty without them running away or into someone else's property? I have always pee pad trained but I am trying to incorporate the outside method... Gizmo is 2yrs and Penny (my boston) is 9 months so she can hold it finally throughout the night.... so any suggestions... can you post ur actual set up or a link to what you have.. thanks!!:) |
We do it old school==== leash.;) |

It would be a great age to take both of them to basic obedience training. I would put them on a leash until you are very sure of them but even then if you are not on a farm or rural area and possibly near traffic I would always keep them on a leash outside. When you took them for walks did they pee and do their business outside?? |
yes gizmo my 2 yr old will pee the moment he goes out.. penny is like a water fountain as soon as it comes in it goes out..lol... Penny HATES leashes and will sit on her heiney until you take it off or go inside with her..(drama queen)... I was thinking of getting a xpen or temporary fencing of some type... any suggestions... |
Before we had a fence we just used a leash to walk Georgie. Sometimes though, he would want to spend more time outside and I would take his retractable leash and loop it around a patio chair. That way he could roam around or sun himself and I could watch from inside. If I'm doing something outside too, like hanging Christmas lights I can let him drag his retractable leash around. If he starts to run away the leash handle starts to bounce and "chase" him and he stops for me to rescue him. haha |
Beau does the leash thing, but my boyfriend's border collie doesn't like to go outside by himself (he was a rescue so he is very attached now) so we go outside with him and the MINUTE he does his duty we call his name and make him come back in. Or we just walk around with Scout (BF's pup) on his leash (like we were going on a walk) until he's done his thing then he comes back in... |
We have 2 of the very light weight (green ones) plastic coated tie outs. We just hooked them together and the one end we put around the bottom of one of our porch supports. That way Koda has a good distance he can walk around and do as he pleases but still can't go too far. It works out great. I paid I think 6 bucks for each of them. |

I would really suggest doing it for ANY dog of ANY age! Beau was 6 when we brought him and he learned a lot! |
We have a fence, but there are two places where she could get out if she were ever left alone to do it. We started out with the leash, but now she goes without the leash. She's really good about not running off. Even when I take her out to the front yard, where it is open, she doesn't run off, and I'm always there with her. Now if I just left her alone, I don't know what would happen. |
We use 26ft Flexi's. Trust me, I'd rather have a fence, but it's a townhouse and we can't. They go outside ONLY (yes even at night, in the rain, etc. ) and it works pretty well. They just have to walk past the porch & sidewalk to the grass and they can run about 10 feet back and forth if they want to. Mostly they pee as soon as they hit the grass, but sometimes they decide to push the boundaries a little and see how far the leash will let them go. Generally if they just want to go out and sniff we just take them for a walk and then they get it out of their system. Also, mine have had training but terriers are not the most reliable outside - at least mine aren't! Sammy has only had 1 class and she will come if you are outside WITH her. Loki has had TONS of training, but outside he would run after another dog before listening to me. And Sam would run after a squirrel. It's not worth risking... we do our best to keep them on leashes at all times. |
Erin I think that is good advise. I'm in a pretty secure area and I don't use a leash with Crystal and it has worked for much of her 13 yrs but you have to know your dog and how well trained they are. I would never go near traffic with my yorkie without a leash. Young dogs like to chase rabbits etc but that one word 'stay' if you can get it through there head when they dart out the door when they should not is worth it's weight in gold. |
I live in the country and do not have a fenced yard, not that it would do me anygood. Mine are always on a leash attached to my hand. We have some really big hawks, I have seen them snatch up kittens without warning and I am TERRIFIED that one might get one of my little dogs. I guess I might be overly protective, but my babies are never out of my control when we go outside, never more than arms length away, I've just heard too many horror stories. |
I take my girls out for a walk 3 times a day. My Queen B, Diva, who is almost 2, does not like the leash at all....as soon as it goes on...she's a statue..so she walks without a leash most of the time but I still carry it and she stillhas her harness on just in case. Everyone asks me, how did you train her to do that...well when she was about 7 months old, I used to not use the lease for our late night walk...which is when noone else is out so I was able to see how she would do..when we get a curb, I put my hand down flat and say stay or wait...When I say okay or lets go, she knows we cross...A neighbor who lives a couple of streets over, tried it one day with her Bichon. She's always said she was gonna try it...she wanted Jax to be like Diva. Well, 1 day after I had just seen her and was back at my front door...in a matter of 3 minutes I see Jax come from nowhere run onto my porch to play with Diva and foxxy and minutes later she was running behind to catch him...it was so funny!!!! Needless to say, Jax stays on a leash... Now my Foxxy is a little more wilder so she's on a leash and Diva walks calmly beside us.:D I know I'm bad and Diva should really be on a leash so I've been alternately putting her on one. I do want her to be one of those happy dogs when they see their leash but right now, that's not the case....I do leash her when going to other places, groomers, petsmart, parks, etc. |
I forgot my usual disclaimer about flexis. Do not walk your dog with a flexi unless it is locked. Mine cannot reach the street or our property line if I am standing on the porch with the flexis. I use the 26 foot ones because they have less tension than the 16 foot ones, which is good for tiny dogs. When we go for walks we use 4' leashes :) I agree about STAY. Loki has a great stay inside and even outside on a leash. He knows he must have a leash on to go outside. I just know that if he saw something he considered "scary" (a big dog) I would lose his attention. It truly is about knowing your dog. Sammy is still learning so we have to be careful with her. She tries to run outside to greet people when they open the door, but then follows them right back in. Luckily we don't have squirrels at our house, but my mom does and I know she would bolt after a squirrel. |
Mine just don't run off...unless there is another dog or cat outside. We just walk out and check to make sure all's clear, then bring them out. If they start to wander, I just call them back. Occasionally they may get a foot or so into my neighbor's yard and poo, but I just pick it up and she doesn't mind. We go out in the front yard all the time with them (only 1 or 2 at a time) and they just stay right there. We just watch very closely. Ane we live in the very back of a huge neighborhood in a cul-de-sac, so there are never many cars. We know all of the neighbors and they drive SUPER slow because there are always kids or dogs or people out and everyone of us has dogs. |
Hi, We live on 2 acres and do not have a fence. From day one - I took both dogs out in the yard and taught them the boundaries. We took them around the yard and showed them what was good and what was bad. They know that they are only allowed out of the yard unless they are on a leash. I would have to say - most of the training came from Steve - he is really good at training dogs and he has had them his entire life and trained each and everyone one of them the same way. It is weird - they never try to run or anything like that. They actually run towards the house when they have finished. |
We use Flexi leashes. It gives them more room to walk around. Because for some reason my dogs have to be all the way at the end of their leash before they poop. |

Pens I have 2 big 10x20 pens-- they are portable and can be moved if needed, very handy if you're renting. I have a smaller one for my puppies. we put plastic lattice over the tops and latched it down with cable ties just in case of hawks. we live in the country so we have to be careful. they love to play out there, we put some plastic lawn chairs and toys and dog houses and they really love it, they stay out for a couple of hours on nice days.:) |
Were old school too, we use a leash. |
Flexi is our only option, because of the wildlife here, they go nuts when they see or smell deer, bobcat, cougar and god knows whats above  and trust me i am not a person that is easly scared... and too many sad Stories from Neighbors !!! |
I always take Lacy out on a leash. I use a leather step-in harness & leash set. |
I live in apartments. So there's no fences here except behind us to block us from the next road with houses. I use the flexi standard leash and a harness. It's the rules anyway they can't be off leash. Cody has escaped out the front door a few times. gave me a scare. and you know how fast they run.. so yeah always a harness and leash for mister cody james :D good luck! |
Leash and or a small pen which is set up right outside the back door. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...amily&keepsr=1 |
