Elizabethan Collar Jesse was neutered today. Poor thing. He went through a lot. Neutering, ear treatment, teeth cleaning, vaccines. He's doing well. Drugged up on painkillers and napping in between me and my boyfriend on the couch. The only problem is that he is so sad with the Elizabethan Collar on. He's afraid of it and keeps backing up as though he thinks he stuck his head through something and backing up will free him. It's actually quite cute. The vet said to keep it on for two days, give or take. He said that I could take it off earlier and see how Jesse does. If he nips at his stitches it has to go back on. How long did you leave the collar on after neutering? Did it make your dog miserable? Did you give him breaks from it? Thanks, Sarah |
My little girl didn't wear a collar. I kept her in a baby onesie so that she couldn't get to her stitches. I'm glad your baby is doing okay!! |
The cone does not need to stay on IF he doesn't touch his stitches at all. If you suspect that he has licked at or scratched his stitches at all, even if it was just one time for just a few seconds, then that cone needs to go on. I'm sorry if it seems cruel to you, but imagine what would happen if he didn't wear the cone and if he tore out his stitches. he'd have to go back into surgery and have an even worse recovery. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. |
He will get used to it and Charlie has worn the hard plastic collar and soft collar. The soft collar was easier for him to wear. Warmly, Deborah PS I would keep it on him as suggested by the vet. No breaks or he may nip at his sutures. Be patient, Momma and he is a-okay. |
I think while you are with him and can watch him, the collar does not need to be on. If you can find a diaper at petsmart that might be a good solution for the times you won't be around him. |

My vet told me to keep the cone on for 2 weeks to let the wound fully heal (my Tobi licked his stiches). Even though it seems cruel, leaving the cone on is REALLY important. My uncle's pekingnese (sp?) was neutered and he licked his stiches which resulted in a bad infection. The infection lasted a long time..and now the dog still has issues with that area. |
Hate the plastic collar. They are very uncomfortable and claustrophobic. I went with the soft inflatable collar for 2 weeks. It gives they better mobility, vision is not hampered and most of all they are more comfortable, particulary when they are resting or sleeping. Got mine at Petco best investment that can be use again and again. |
I also used a baby onesie on Kiwi when she was spayed. It worked great! She was much happier with the onesie than with that collar thing. |
Poor thing!:( They actually have the collars at PetSmart. The part that fits by the neck has some padding and they have them that are clear so he would be able to see through it...maybe that would help him feel less like he was in a 'tunnel.' |

Well when Max got neutered we bought the plastic one but the vet tech gave me one that was to big and too heavy so Max head keep falling to the floor. We took it off and he didn't touch or mess with his stiches. During the 2 weeks it took for him to recover before they removed the stiches he didn't use the collar. What was best of all he didn't even try to nip on the stiches or anything like that. So I can say we were lucky. |
I'd leave the collar on except when he goes to eat. |
For those of you who used the e-collar and not the onesie, why did you do that? I know there are a few dogs that get to their stitches through a onesie but most don't. Is there something I'm missing?:confused: |
