Sliding Glass Door Patio Doggie Door
 

I have just purchased a patio doggie door for my sliding glass door for my lil one and was wondering if anyone uses one and how easy/difficult is it to get them used to using it???? If you do use one how did you train them???

I don't have one in my sliding glass door, but I installed one in my storm door.

I just coaxed them through a few times wjhile holding the flap up then, coaxed them with the flap down, they caught on right away. My 6 week old puppies were using it.

They love the freedom.

I have two!! one for the glass door and one for the pool screen.
Between 3 months and 8 months or so i had to leave the flap up.
Bella was scared of the noise the magnet made when it slammed shut.
I would stand on one side and someone else on the other.
we kept pushing her thru the flap and giving treats and praise.
By 10-11 months she mastered it!!!

here are two pics of bella when she was 5 months old. she couldnt get the booboo outside because it was too long. lol so it took her a few hours to realize if she dropped it inside then went outside, she could pull it thru..one smart cookie!:D

Isn't it amazing just how smart they are :D My lil one catches on quite quickly too so I am hoping that she does also with the doggie door...

Well Lil' Miss Izzie's Patio Doggie Door arrived on Saturday....It was installed and then came the training process :eek: As long as the flap is taped up she has no problem going both in n out..:coolsmile But when the flap is down, she is hesitant in using it....I think she doesn't like the sound of the magnets hitting the metal......soooooooooo any suggestions on how I can get her used to going through it both going out and coming back in?????????? I want to keep this a positive experience for her.....

I'd be afraid to have a doggie door. Too many yorkies are stolen right out of their yards when left unattended. I'd be worried sick thinking about Lacy going outside without me watching her

My hubby made our doggie door..and it works like a charm..they love it, and of course we love it as they can go and come as they please to their back yard..I have not seen the one that you bought, and not sure about magnets..mine does not make a noise..pooh's mum

Izzie doesn't go out unless I'm home and there to supervise and watch her....I would never let her out by herself...I have to be extremely careful of hawks/crows/owls/coyotes here.....I just thought it would be a nice alternative instead of having the entire sliding glass door open while she is outside with me watching of course :D

Well here we are...Dec 16....one week later since she has had her doogie door installed....she still is hesitant in using it....if it's left open (taped up) she has no problem going in n out...but with the flap down she just sits indoors and wines/barks to be let out....and then once outdoors...sits n whines to be let in........soooooooo of course I go over and raise the flap for her to go out/come in.........I don't want her to get into the routine of thinking that this is how she is to use this door.......sooooooooo does anyone have any suggestions on how to train her on using this door????

My good friend has a doggie door that is in their glass door, and it's great..hers trained to it very well..with the one, her hubby took a treat, went out the door, then put the treat inside the doggie door and then pulled it towards him with the puppy following...That's what I had wanted to get, but hubby didn't want too..:( so, just stuck with the pee pads

We started with the flap taped up and used treats...that got them use to the jumping through part.

Then we left the flap taped up and taped up a hand towel.....teaching them to push something to get through - again more treats to get them to move the towel to get through.

Then we taped over the magnets on the flap and the doggie door....and made them begin to get use to the flap being heavier than the towel....praising them when they went through and went potty. (At this point there was some noise of the flap and they began to get use to that.)

Finally we untaped the magnets and found our biggest struggle was that it was a little heavy for Magic to push through.....but she eventually learned. (In fact to this day she still waits for the flap to stop before going through....as she does not like it to come back and hit her if she is not the first one out the door.)

As you can tell we ran into the same thing you are going through....hang in there....maybe try some of the above and see if it helps. (By the way, I bet we used the hand towel up for several weeks....maybe even longer...as we were not sure at first Magic was strong enough to handle the weight of the flap.)

Good luck in your training of the doggie door.....you will love it once they are trained!!

We had a doggie door at our old houes and I MISS IT:( .. I want to get this sliding door doggie door.. BUT HOW SAFE IS THIS????

All my dogs took to it had no problem

Ok, well it took Millie over month to get used to the doggie door. I would sit on the floor on the opposite side of the door she was on, hold the flap up and tempt her thru the door with a treat. I would then go back to the other side of the door and tempt her thru with a treat, holding flap up. I would do this in short training intervals. I would slowly lower the grade of the openness of the doggie door so she would get used to getting thru with a partial flap. She really did not like it at all when the flap was all the way down. I thought she was never going to get the hang of it, but I did not give up, because my husband put the darn thing up, just for her to use!

Well, one day she was sitting on the sofa looking out the window, and she saw a dog outside and she bolted off the couch, out the doggie door, and to the front porch to bark at this other dog. That was when I knew things were going to be ok. When she did not "think" about it, she was quite successful in getting the job done. It took about a week more for her to get real comfortable with it, but it did happen.

My advise is just keep up the training and eventually she will see the advantage of having the doggie door and eventually start using it all by herself.
