Introduction Hi, I am picking up my new baby girl in about 3 weeks, and I currently have a 2-year old yorkie boy. Can someone tell me how to introduce the baby to my boy without having the territorial issue? I heard that they should be introduced outside home the first time, is that true? How to monitor them when they are together at home after the first introduction? Thanks. |
You should definetly introduce them outside somewhere your current baby doesn't feel is his/hers. Then only leave them together inside when you can supervise until you see how they get along. Don't be surprised if they don't get along well at first. It takes time, and sometimes the older dog doesn't like the puppy jumping all over them. |
Should I 'punish' or show some sign if the older dog shows agression or growling at the baby? |
Hello and welcome to Yt! Congrats on your new baby girl! I think it's wise that they be introduced at a park, or some where off your property. Good luck! |

The breeder from whom I got Chuy is giving me a little girl in lieu of payment for designing his website and he's been offering me some advice on this subject. He's telling me to spend more time with Chuy than the baby for the first couple weeks to help Chuy understand the new baby isn't taking his place in the home. He said as long as the new one is getting attention, she won't mind being "second" as that's what she'll be used to until Chuy is adapted to her. Once he starts making advances toward her, usually after a couple weeks, then I'm to include her in our play sessions. Now that doesn't mean ignore her all together, as it's important she has her time, but just give more to your current baby for a short time. |
