Puppy on an airplane I purchased my puppy from a breeder in another state and I was going to drive 7 hours to pick him up but I just wont be able to. I'm having him flown to me on Dec 20th and I am very nervous about it and absolutely hate to do this to him. He will be about 9 weeks old and I know his stress levels will be raised due to the flight, new environment etc. How can I help him adjust to his new environment and lower his stress levels? Is there anything I can do as soon as I get him? I told the breeder to include a blanket or something with the sent from their home so that he can be a bit more relaxed or have something to comfort him. What else can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
I would give the puppy a little Nutrical when he arrives at the airport. Make sure to offer water too. Keep him warm all the way home and put him in his already set up bed/crate when you get home. I would give a little more Nutrical and offer food and water again. I wouldnt over do the hugging and kissing too much as the pup might be tired and want to get some sleep. I have had a few puppies flown in and they all were just fine. but all the flights were short, about an hour in the air and an hour at the airport. Good luck!!! How exciting!!!!! |
I would be very surprised if the airlines will allow him to fly this time of year. They check the temps on both ends and if it is below or above a certain tem, they are not allowed to fly. |

I agree with the other. Have nutrical ready, and nice warm blankets. Maybe if the breeder holds on to him a little longer you'd be able to drive there. |
The breeder said he will be flying Delta Pet First. It said its a temperature-controlled cabin. A friend of mine had their yorkie sent over the same time of year with Delta and the puppy seemed to be ok. You guys are starting to freak me out now hehe. But I did order nutrical about a week ago so I should have it within the next few days and will definitely give it to the pup like you all said along with a warm blanket and some water. How about when I bring him home? Good thinking not to smother him with hugs and kisses which will be almost impossible. What about one of those baby toys where you hear the mothers heartbeat? Or anything else? |
Oh and the breeder said he was moving along very quickly compared to his 2 other sisters. Thats why she said he would be ready at 9 weeks. He will be close to 10 weeks when she ships him. |

The breeder is putting a waterproof pad in her crate and a warm bed that she bought for her. She is waiting until the last minute, on her end, to put the puppy on the plane. Continental has a special Van that holds the puppies until the last minute, so they aren't stuck in a cold store room. I will be waiting on my end with the Nutrical and a blanket (in case she pees on her blanket or it is wet) and a thermos of water. Continental has a special free parking spot for those people picking up pets. My daughter will wait in the car with the heater on. Other than that, there's not much else I can do to make the transition easier. I'm a nervous wreck though. Good luck with your puppy. :) |

The pet cabin is temperature controlled, but it is still much cooler than the puppy is used to. How much does he weigh? |
Where can I find nutrical? I might be in the same position in a few weeks and also want to have the nutrical on hand. Thanks. |

As a breeder and a person that has shipped puppies and the last three times used "Delta Pet First, I can tell you it is nothing more than the cargo area. But it is temp controlled. Hiopefully your puppy will be alright. I have turned sales down on my litter because I cannot ship right now to some areas. Good luck with your puppy. Everyone has given you great advice. |

Well Northwest might ship at a temp above 10 degrees but I have better sense than to put a puppy on in 20 degree weather (that is above 10) Continnetal has the best set up just like some one mentioned before me but they don't fly pets out of my area. |

Yes, you are right. Our "Delta pet First' is the regular cargo area and it is in a separate building about a quarter of a mile from the terminal. Some people think that because it's called pet first that it is a special place but not so. that is just the telephone line you go in on to book your pets flight. But when I have taken mine to ship, the attendant has always booked them and fixed the paper work and called someone and told them he had a pet ready to go. |

Thank you everyone for all your help and advice. I will take everything into consideration and take all necessary precautions. I'm sure he will be ok. As for the nutrical, I had to order it from Walmart online because the store didnt carry it. Nor did petsmart or petco. Thanks again everyone!!!! |
