Boarding a yorkie
 

My little sweetheart was put to sleep last June. She was 16. My husband said I would have kept her on life support if I could have. ( Joke) to me not funny.
We were constant companions. But I couldnt see her suffer any longer and had to let her go. This was so hard for me. I am still mourning her loss.
Everyone says "get another' but I know she will not be replaced.
I have started to think about another dog in the near future. Maybe after christmas.

I have a concern now of leaving a yorkie with my vet when I go on vacation. We are gone 2 weeks out of the year and most places dont take dogs.I have never used this vet but anyone around here that has a dog goes there and raves about the vet. He loves animals so, I will more than likely change to this vet when we get a new dog.

Has anyone here left there dog either boarding or with a vet. Do they board OK.
My relatives now have too many dogs and I would not leave a yorkie with them anymore.
Please give me advice on boarding. We are going on vacation in April and I and concerned about having to put our Yorkie at the vet for a week.

I'm sorry for your loss...we lost our first Yorkie when he was almost 13 so I know exactly how you feel. We waited a while before getting another Yorkie...first we got Jo and about 6 months later we got Riley.

I only boarded our boyz one time and it was at a boarding kennel. I hated it...but leaving them at a vet is worse. Most vets only have small cages for them to stay in and they're taken outside once or twice a day. If you use a regular boarding kennel they have a larger indoor/outdoor area to stay in. I think a boarding kennel gives them a little more attention.

When we travel our boyz go with us and now that we have the 2 girls they will go also. We've never had any trouble taking them into hotels. Sure, it takes a little more work but to me it's worth it to know they are with me and being taken care of.

Good luck if you decide to find a new baby...there are a lot of good breeders and rescue groups on this site that should be able to help you.

If there is a PetSmart PetsHotel nearby, check that out. One just opened here and everyone so far said it is great. The kennels at the one near me are the big ones so there is plenty of room for them to move around. You can also upgrade from the standard kennel to a "suite" it has a TV in it and a glass door.

Another suggestion: Get to know YorkieTalker's in your area. A lot of us will leave our furbabies with a fellow Talker. But do get to know them before you even consider leaving your baby with someone. The majority of us are good 'eggs' and love babysitting. :D

If I had to board it would be at the vet. I would feel safer knowing they could get any help they might need.

I am having a similar issue. I will be leaving on a mission for 18 months and do not have the option to take my precious little Lucy:( It is tearing me apart to think of her in a cage:( I want her to be loved and cared for as she is here.


I want to her to go where the care takers have a love for all Yorkies and does not cage them.


I would leave her with family but I still feel she would be more happy with someone that has yorkies also so that she would have play mates and in her own element or should I say pack.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would use yelp.com and look up places that board near your area. I read reviews on there for everything from restaurants to nail shops so I am sure you could find a boarder that has good reviews that seems trustworthy.

Can't help, sorry. Just wish you luck, 18 mths is a long time to leave your little one, that's gonna be hard for you. Wish you were closer...I'm in the UK. I'd of offered help. Let us know how it goes for you both.

I'm a big fan of Camp Bow Wow. We've used the one here several times, and haven't had any issues, so far. The longest period of time that Ian has stayed there was for two nights, but in June my hubby and I will be going to St. Lucia for a week, and plan to bring him there. Like you, I will be a nervous wreck because we have never left him anywhere for that long.

I would try to find a yorkie person to care for the puppy. I kept 2 yorkies for a couple while they were finding a new job and home in another state. I had the "girls" for a couple of months, before they were able to come back and get them. They were trying to sell them because of their situation. I questioned why and wished them luck. They then messaged me to see if I would be interested in fostering them until they could find a place. I did and only charged them for the cost of food. Their are people out there, you just need to search for them!

Agreed!! Maybe even someone here would be willing to help. How about it OP? Put an add here on YT for someone willing to look after your pup in your area. Maybe even offer to cover vet expenses if they were to have an emergency. (*knocks on wood that no emergencies actually happen*)

I am going to try a new thing I heard of from my groomer. It is called dog Vacay. It is a service where people watch your dog in their homes. I just went and visited my first place. Two women who love animals. One stays home all day, the other works some. They love dogs. They have a 9 lb. chihuahua who seemed to really like Lexi. They played really well together. The women seem very calm. My concern was and is still, that Lexi is so dang small. They assured me they have experience caring for little pups. They used to have two 2 lb. chihuahuas. I am not sure why, but I just had a good feeling after the meet and greet. They don't take more than two dogs at a time and under 20 pounds. So, we are going away for the weekend in a couple weeks. We'll see how it goes. I have my brother on standby just in case. But I think things will be fine. Check and see if they have dog Vacay in your area. Or like others suggested, try another yorkie talker. I don't live by anyone I know though.

I heard a story about a person who left there dog at the vet to be boarded and she went to pick him up and his bed was soaked in pee. I will not board my dog if she can't go somewhere I won't. A lot of people treat dogs bad simply because they can and the dogs can't do anything but take it. Heck they could hire someone who abuses animals and that person could be hurting your dog.

I have heard several scary stories about pet vacay. Please be careful leaving your baby in someone's home.

I used to board my big lab at the vet years ago, but because of his size, he had a large run with an opening to the outside (yes, I made sure I toured the premises before leaving him there). Our old vet where we used to live would let our lab have free run of the place & he mostly slept on the sofa in the vet's office. We have only boarded our yorkie twice at the vet (same one) but due to his size, he was in a crate & let out only a few times a day. It was traumatic for me to leave him, so now we just find dog-friendly places to go, or dh & I go out of town seperately so someone stays with Huey :rolleyes:. I have an emergency back up plan of a coworker who also has a yorkie, so if I have to leave spur of the moment or go somewhere he is not allowed, I have a safe place for him to stay. I think I'm done with boarding unless there is no other choice.

Thanks I am sure this is the way I will go. However a I was posting on here I thought of a lady in our area that use to take care of her sons yorkie that she loved but he has since taken him back, so I know she loves yorkies. I am first going to ask her then if that does not pan out. I will probably post an ad. Not to sure how to do that through this website?

I will for sure be the odd person out and tell you I ONLY board my dog at a my Vet if she cannot come with us. My Vet has been caring for my animals for well over 16 years, she is a kind and compassionate person and know exactly how I expect my girl to treated.

Sophie Kate has been staying there since she was 5 months old, she knows the Vet and the Techs and will dance with excitement when we pull in. My Vet has 24 hour coverage in their office, Sophie Kate does not stay in a pen or a run except for at night to sleep, any other time she can usually be found lounging in their cat play room (they have a clinic cat who has his own room but rarely uses it).

My Vet may be the exception but I am very happy with the care that Sophie Kate receives there.

I would not board my dog with anyone I found through an ad. I would go with the vet, licensed boarding facility that I have toured or am very familiar with, or with someone I know well. You have to understand that too many people do not know how to keep a yorkie safe-they let them get loose, run off, dropped, injured...the list of possibilities haunts me, which is why I don't go overnight anywhere unless he goes with me or hubby is home.
You can never be too careful.

A vet or a boarding facility is ok for a 2-3 week vacation. This person is looking to board their dog for 18 months while they are on a mission that the pup cannot join her on. That's why I suggested she post a thread or "ad" here seeing if there is anyone in her/his area she/he can meet, interview, maybe even setup an account with hat person's vet for that length of time. It would be more of a foster situation than boarding. I have met some truly wonderful people here on YT. One of them is the one person in the world I trust my beloved Kaji to when I go on vacation. She's a lifesaver, loves him as much as I do, and it helps that her dog is Kaji's BFF. It also helps that I know she's a foster mom, which tells me just how big her heart is for this breed. :) :love: That's why I suggested this poster try to make a local friend through this board. Who knows, they may end up having a great friend they could truly trust with their pup.

18 months is a long time, I have no idea what would do with Sophie Kate if I had to be gone for 18 months. I would ask a friend or a family member for sure first.

I know for sure I would not board her at my Vet or any vet for 18 months. Your dog is going to need humans they can bond with, trust. Dang that this a tough situation. Where are you located? If you are near Georgia (the State) let me know I can help you find someone locally.

Hi there. First, I am so sorry for your loss. You will know when the time is right for your new yorkie baby. You are right, they don't replace the ones that have passed on but they do help fill that void left in your heart.

Here is my two cents on boarding at a vet. I have seen behind the scenes at a lot of clinics and hospitals. My advice would be to ask for a tour of the facility. If they refuse then I would not board there much less use them for veterinary services.

The advantages of boarding at your vet would be the obvious of having a person available to you right away if there should be a problem. Even something as small as a bought of diarrhea can be treated right away. And at a veterinary facility, they will be more quick to identify a problem.

The disadvantage would be that if the facility is so busy with the goings-on; with their patients, surgeries, hospitalized patients and clients, that boarders often get left on the back burner and may not get walked or checked on until it's time to feed them. This is more common for vet facilities that are really not set up for boarding. The last place I worked at was very much like that. We would get so busy there was nobody available to walk the boarders. Some pets would stay in their kennels all day :(. The patients took priority. I always felt bad for the boarders who, at times, were fed and that's all the attention they got. (unless there was a problem of course)

There are some vet facilities that are set up for boarding and have staff that does nothing but take care of their boarders. The pets get walked at scheduled times and receive lots of attention and care. This is why I suggested you ask for a tour and ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask how many walks/play time they get. Ask if they have a kennel person that takes care of the boarders only.
