Help!! Hello everyone, This is my first time to have a litter of little Yorkies. They are 10 weels old and I am not having an easy time fiding homes for them. Well 5 days ago a woman came and left a deposit on a puppy saying that in 2 days she will pick him up. She never came... So she called the day after she was supposed to come (I had to cancel going out of town to wait for her to come on saturday) Sunday she called and said she would be there monday. Never came. If she bails out am supposed to return the deposit? I now have to renew the ad in the paper and I have been stuck at home now for two days waiting for her to show up. I don't know what to do. Is there anyone else who has had this kind of experience? Thanks |
dont rush please I dunno but to me it sounds like you are in such of a hurry to get rid of these babies. Im not a breeder but if i were a buyer i wouldnt buy from that simple fact. Make sure these babies are going to good homes, advertise in the breeders section of this website and locally and state wide if funds permit. Im looking for a breeder who takes their time in these transactions and is as helpful as possible. Im sorry but unless my mom died i wouldnt miss an appointment to pickup my yorkie ever. Its just irresponsible and shows that the lady may not be the right fit for your yorkie. just sit down, have a glass of wine and watch some Everybody Loves Raymond reruns...if you breed them, they will come. thats all i have since im an owner and not a breeder someone else will chime in with much better input. Be sure to take your time and make sure they go to the best homes possible, even if that means waiting several more weeks and turning away people that are interested. Make up a detailed questionair and do a phone or in-person interview. Observe them with the puppies when they visit. It's so important to make sure they go to the right home so just be patient. Maybe you can list them for sale here on YT. |
I am not in a hurry, I am just posting because I don't know what to do about the deposit... :0) I am not good with dealing with money. I am so nervous about that part.. |
One more question... How do you know what a fair price is for your pups? Is there some sort of giudeline for that? I can say I have the best babies ever, but I am being prejudice because I have raised them and loved them since birth.. I am going to think they are the best, but I don't want to over price them and turn away loving families. |
I wouldnt give her deposit back. She evidentally has a problem and is not very interested in the puppy. I dont think she seems to be a great candidate to buy a puppy either. Plus she is very rude to keep you hanging and wasting your time, not to mention, to run another add. The situation that you are experiencing happens quite often. Personally, I dont wait on people anymore. If they cant be prompt, dont call if they will be late, or dont show up, they dont need one of my puppies. Good luck with the rest of your litter. Dont rush it!! Ten weeks is a little young and you hopefully want to find loving forever homes for them and not just sell to first person with the money. |

Also, you do need to be advertising..A lot of people don't want puppies that are 4 mos old, they want to get them younger, and by then, most likely, you're going to have to start lowering the price..The lady I got my last one from sold all but one of hers, the last one is now 4 mos old, and she's had to lower the price on him, and still nothing yet.. First, you are not alowed to advertise them for sale in the breedwer's section as someone mentioned. You can post them for sale in the forum for sale at ten weeks old. But, in the meantime, you can post pictures in the Nursery forum. Just not mentioneing they are for sale. Many, many puppies are sold straight out of the nursery. People will pm you if interested. About the deposit, as Fair Lacy said, she is not entitled to her deposit back unless YOU change your mind or something happens to the pup while it is your care. If you are going to be selling puppies, you really need a contract/purchase agreement that spells all these things out so you and the buyer are both on the same page. |
Dee--These pups ARE 10 weeks old.:cool: To the OP, not sure what you can legally do about the deposit without a written agreement, which you should have had. (Yeah yeah, hindsight 20/20) I would question placing a pup with someone as irresponsible and inconsiderate. I feel like, regardless of the situation, anytime someone makes a deposit and then can't keep their end of the bargain (again, which should be documented in writing) then you are entitled to keep the deposit--that is what a deposit is for, IMO. If you are not comfortable with her having the pup, tell her you've changed your mind and then give her back the money and chaulk it up as the first of many monetary losses in the breeding biz. Most breeders try to have homes lined up BEFORE having a litter so that they have ample time to screen prospective homes/owners and so they can avoid this problem. Many times when people have problems placing them, they are less strict about who they place them with. Good luck! |

It's really amazing what happens when you become a breeder....You are then a business and then you are at the mercy of the public.....people think your life revolves around them. Those things happen. As far as returning her money, if you don't have that clause in your contract and even if you do and she hasn't signed it....you must return the money.....I would return it anyway and keep the pup. As far as people not wanting pups at 4 months of age, there are plenty of people that want them then, they have all their shots and most likely are at least piddle pad trained. The up side of this is that this is the Holidays....better for the pup and you won't have to worry that the pup will be neglected, this is a busy time of the year. As far as pricing...it depends on the region you live in and the quality of the pups. |

The best thing to do is what Bama says....preplan prior to breeding, make sure that pups have homes prior to the breeding. It doesn't always guarantee that things won't fall through....but, having a waiting list gives you the ability for a back up plan. |
