Puppy play or aggression I was testing my 4 month old Yorkie while he was eating a bully stick. When I went to take it away from him he growled at me and snapped. Is this the beginning stages of aggression and if so how do I curb this? Comments or suggestions are welcomed |
Start the Nothing in Life is Free program. It is very effective and recommended by the Humane Society. Here is lots of information: http://www.k9deb.com/nilif.htm http://www.idahohumanesociety.com/ca...n/notfree.html http://thedogdude.com/using-nothing-...the-alpha-dog/ http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/nothingfree.htm |
When Rockie first growled at me like that, I firmly told him "no" and took his toy from him. He is much better now when I take his toys from him. :yorkiesar |
I currently already do the NILIF technique - he has to sit before he comes out his cage, in front of the kitchen door (because he is not allowed in the kitchen), before he eats or gets his treats, or even before we play fetch he has to sit. I just hope that we are going through the process of him submitting to us. i took his bully stick away and put him on his back and firmly said no and gave his bully stick back in a few minutes. He does not do this with his food or or his toys, just his "flavored" chew toys. |
Bully sticks seem to trigger my one normally completely passive dog to become a little grumbling meanie when I take his stick away, so he gets them in limited amounts and I make him work for them, then give them to me when I tell him to so that he's learned to be "polite". I started when they were babies teaching them give. They will actually sit and wait until I say ok when there's a toy on the ground. When I give them the OK command, they can go play with it. Start by giving them a toy or treat and taking it, then praising like crazy when they give it w/o any negative reaction, give it back AND also give a treat. Continue to do this in 5 minute sessions until the behavior is natural :) That's what works for me! :) |
