Pulling me along during walks Chachi gets so excited during walks he pulls you along. He gets his leash all tangled. He is usually coughing from pulling so much. Is there anything I can do to get him to calm down during walks? |
Are you using a harness rather than a colar? that might cut down on the choking. As far as the pulling goes you might want to enroll in a class at petsmart or something. What I do with mine is to keep them at my heel and when they start pulling I stop walking and put them in a sit , stay and waited until they calmed down. As soon as they start pulling again , tug and say no and stop if need be. |
I'm amazed too at how much a tiny little dog can pull, hehe!!! |
Thanks I am going to try that. Chachi is so hyper during walks its kinda not fun to take him. My other dog jewels walks real nice staying right at your side. |
It isn't as fun walking a dog that pulls. My poor sister-in-law can not walk her cocker at all. He's just large enough that when he pulls, hes too strong and yanks her arm. Mia and Bentley are small enough and walk well enough on a lead that I can hold onto it with one finger. Also do not use a retractable lead. That just encourages them to go further than need be. The whole idea or walking on a leash is for you to be in control of them, Not them in control of you. If you can't get it right investing in a class would be well worth it. Those classes are really about training a dogs "owner" . Once you are shown how , it will be so easy. The classes are harder for the person to learn than the dog. But it is fun and I bet you would enjoy it. Good luck. |
i would use a harness instead of a leash. There necks and trachea are very fragile and can be easily hurt..Hopefully he will get used to it.. |
I use a harness but part of it goes around his waist and the other part around his neck. When he pulls as much as he does it still puts pressure on his neck. |
I have the exact same problem with Max! I was hoping for some good advice too! I tried holding his leash short and making him walk along side me but if you give him an inch he's pulling like a madman and coughing too and yes I use a harness too! |

Walking on a loose leash. I am in a training class at Petco, and the instructor told us that as soon as the dog starts pulling,, you need to "stand like a tree" (don't move at all). They will soon realize that when they pull they dont get anywhere. Another way to train them to walk next to you, is to have a treat and hold it down by their nose and have him follow it along side of you, and give it to him every few feet and give him praise for walking next to you. Ever since this class walking has become so much more enjoyable. Good luck! |
