how cold is too cold? i live in the midwest and we're having an ice/sleet storm today and it's quite cold outside -- about 28 degrees. i took peanut outside to do her business and noticed she didn't like her little paws getting so cold on the icy grass. we got little boots for her, but they restricted her walking and it was pitiful! we're returning them.... anyways, how cold is too cold for me to take my baby outside? i know we can still have her pee pads out inside, but she really prefers to poo outside and otherwise she'll poo in the wrong place inside. what do you think? |
My pom is fine with it but my 2 yorkies won't go outside now that they saw the snow. I may put their sweatrs on and put them outside so they get use to it. I will just do it for a few minutes. I think 5 minuts should be no problem for them without boots on. |
Hi Raeanne...we're getting some pretty cold wind and ice around the lake today too. How old is Peanut? My girls are 10 weeks old and I'm not letting them go outside yet...they're still inside using wee-wee pads. I don't think it's a good idea to take them out in the cold when they're so young and especially until they have all of their shots so I'd be careful with little Peanut. We'll have to get together for a playdate when it warms up a little! |
My mom is also in Illinois and getting the same stuff you're getting...when I talked to her a bit ago, she had just let her morkie in..as long as they hurry and go out and come back in, they will be fine..she's lived in Illinois all her life, and has always had her little ones go out to potty..they just hurry and go that much quicker.. |
i don't think anything is too cold. we have yorkies on here that live in alaska and they go outside every day. I take morgan outside to pee/poop no matter what the weather. She's a dog, and she goes potty outside. |
I would really bundle them up, and take them out for maybe about five minutes. |
Our pups are 5 yrs, 4 yrs, and almost 2 yrs old.... we too live in the midwest and are getting ice/snow today. Our pups go out but we go out with them, it doesn't take too long (maybe 5 min) and they are ready to come back inside. We are ready too :) They have decided they don't want to go out too often tho..... |
I thought Elphaba would hate the snow because she really doesn't like the rain...but we had our first taste of it a couple weeks back and she loved it...didn't want to "walk" but rather play in the snow. She definitely isn't crazy about the snow...but I bundle her up...sweaters and a jacket and she does fine. Sometimes she'll do her stuff and run back up to the house and sometimes she'll pull me down the sidewalk for a walk. I just take my cue from her....if she wants to walk we walk...if not we go back inside. |

thanks for all the advice everyone! i'll take it all into consideration. :) |
We got the system before you  - what a mess all day. Mine just run out do their business and are back in the house toot-sweet. But they're older. My Roxie- if it's winter and the sun is out, even if there is snow on the ground, can sit outside for a long time -- it's all about the almighty squirrel hunt with that girl - lol; but today in this mess I can hardly get her out the door. |
paw wax Ok... the booties are a no go for the smaller yorkies. I found last year this stuff called paw wax... it protects them from cold and from the salt ...once the sidewalks and driveways are salted. It worked really well. If I make mine go out and put them back in their cage if they don't do their business... they learn to do it fast and get it over w/. I stay out w/ them so I know they are freezing because I am... the faster the better and they learn that quickly! |
We too are getting an ice storm...Winston doesn't mind the cold, but the ice on the grass must hurt his little paws, he can barely walk on it. He'll walk along the buildings, but not out in the yard. I reached down and felt the grass...OMG...it's like slivers of glass. Then on the cement he skitters...but at least he'll walk on it, it's actually kinda cute...slippin' and slidin'. |
This is so funny! Yorkies must have so much in common. Georgia was doing this same "ice dance" today while we were out to go potty! I felt bad, but knew she had to go or else she'd go back in and go. The time or two that she didn't go when we took her outside, she had to go back in her crate, since we're still attempting to crate train. |
