How is your Yorkie's personality?

I have had my adopted yorkie for about 3 weeks now, and I don't know if his true personality has come out yet. He is about 14 months and about 9 lbs, and the original owner is not available to talk to and won't be for a few months.

Bunker is sweet little boy... always laying right next to me and following me around. But, he never leaves my side! When I try to play with him, he gets bored after a short time. He waits at the door when I leave, and is very rambunctious when I get home. Otherwise, I feel that he just lays there all the time, not quite sleeping but tired or bored. Is this normal for a yorkie?

I'm not the expert on yorkies but can tell you based on my two. Their personalities were very apparant when I got them. Chloe at one year is very energetic and curious. She would run around and want to play when I picked her out as a puppy and that has never stopped. Lacey is 10 months and she is a little less curious, stays right by me and plays in spurts. She's smaller at 3 llbs but get scared at noises and is perfectly happy being a lap dog. She exhibited this behavior when I got her as well. Both of them like play time. You might have adopted a pet that nobody played with, so encourage playtime by doing things like taking him for a walk every day, teach him to fetch his ball and give a treat when he does. I assume the vet has checked him out health wise, but if not, I'd do that to be sure there is not a health issue. Although plenty of people have dogs that are big, you might check his weight based on his bone structure and make sure he is eating a healthy diet. Hope this helps.

I think that every Yorkie has a different personality. My 4 month old furbaby TJ is the laziest thing ever. He sleeps most of the day away in my lap. My 10 month old Yorkie Riley on the other hand is very rambunctious. At first, we though there might be something wrong with Little T (TJ) but he was checked by a vet and he is perfectly healthy. If I were you, I would schedule a vet check-up just in case. It will reassure you that nothing is wrong with Bunker, and it will give you a chance to get acquainted to your vet. They are all different, but your boy sounds like a wonderful, companion type Yorkie. I perfer the quieter ons then some who run around all day barking.
It is nice if they have company during the day to break up the boredom, but it is not always possisble...you can leave a radio on for him to him voices.

I'm no expert either ...mine always seem to be doing whatever I'm doing...except typing on the computer - other than that - they are with me all the time and always ready to play... - he could still be adjusting to his new home - he was somewhere else the first 14 months of his life and it must be an adjustment for him I would think....He sounds sweet and maybe he's just more laid back ? either way - congratulations !

Bunker is my first yorkie--and first dog. When I first got him, I posted a thread to get advice because he wasn't eating anything. (Thanks for everyone who helped on that one, too!) You all said he was probably homesick and had a loss of appetite. Plus, he had another dog playmate, and Bunker may be grieving because of their separation. He's doing much better now, and eating a whole lot more.

I will be sure to take Bunker to the vet soon, just to reassure myself he's perfectly healthy--and just a cute lazy dog! :D

My baby's personality
 

My yorkie is very friendly and very demanding, I have a Carn Terrier too and they get along very well. Everytime I take my Carn Terrier for a walk the Yorkie pull his leash with his tiny mouth, he looks so funny.
Yorkies are adorable, he always follow me everywhere around the house, when I grab my keys he knows I'm in my way out of the door and he runs so fast to be next to me so I take him too, he loves to cuddle under the pillows and under his blanket, he wake me up every morning scratching his tiny paws against the matress, he is very attached to me I love him so much.;)

Mine all have very different personalities! We adopted Jax almost a year ago. Jax is blind and diabetic, he is my snuggle buggle boy.
Freedom, we adopted a little over a year ago and he has taken quite some time to come around. He was very stand offish at the beginning but, as time passes he is getting better. Still not a snuggler but will tolerate some play and holding.
Trinity is a 4 mo old pup. She is full of it. She is a friendly lil gal that loves everyone. She loves to bath you in kisses when pulled out of her crate and is just a love bug!!!!!

Everyone LOVES Troy! He's a pure lap dog and likes to find his spot right on your legs. He's an agressive little guy when he's playing with other dogs my best friend calls him a "*$%*& starter". He's curious and likes to explore when we're outdoors. he's only about 3 pounds but he follows me everywhere. Certainly a companion but gets into mischief on his terms.

I found him in the dirty laundry bag this morning.

Winnie is a pistol! That girl is an energizer bunny. She's always looking for trouble, running around like a maniac and barking at everything! I wish I had a calm yorkie like yours. When I take my maltese and her for a walk she bites his leash and drags him across the trail lol, it's so funny. Poor Simon, always being picked on :(

Three of our five Yorkies are rescues and it took them about 1 year to show their true personality. Maximus is 8 y.o. now and we got him when he was 6. His previous owner told us that he never plays and now he is the most playful and loving little boy. He still ducks when we approach him to fast but he doesn't scream anymore. Minnie, his 3 y.o. daughter, was so shy and quiet as a mouse but that changed fast when she started playing with our puppy Mikki. Maggie is 4 y.o. now and we got her 2 years ago. She never let my husband near her until about 1 year ago. She is still a bit introverted but that has also to do with all the health issues she has and the frequent vet visits and the constant administering of medications.
Your little boy will come around, just give him a routine and not much excitement and of course tons of love and patience! Bless you!

My little Oliver's personality was apparent to me the day I met him! He was the tiniest one of his litter mates but definitely had the most spunk and seemed to run the "household" haha. Hasn't changed since I brought him home either :p I'm sure his personality will become even more defined as he gets older but I'm loving every second of it! They're just too funny! :D

I would say my Buddy has a strong personality, he loves being with me, but also likes his own time, he is certainly not scared of any other dog and usually tells them who is boss, he sleeps outside our bedroom door in his own very comfy bed, he knows bedtime is at 10 and he sleeps till 7 the next morning, he knows then its time to get up, during the day he sleep all the time, as when I come home at dinner, I hear a thud in the main bedroom, the thud thud thud down the stairs to greet me, I know he has been asleep all the time on our bed

My dear little Tilly came home about 3weeks ago too!

At first she was very shy, didnt want to play at all, and slept the most of the day (actually ALL day!). She also didnt want to eat at all.

A fiew days ago she wouldnt eat for 3 days, and I took her to the vet. She had a cold! And the most likely reason she didnt eat was because of a sore throat. We got her injections and she is on medication.

Now she is starting to feel better, and atlast I can see her personality comming out. She is so playfull, but not over-energetic, she has her naps, always wants to be close to me. And she is eating better (but still a picky eater). In other words she is just the Perfect Yorkie!

I think after all this time, she is actually adapting to our house, she is getting used to me, (as Im getting used to her) and now she actually isnt that shy anymore, and loves to play with me.

My main point is take him to the vet (if you havent done so) and just do a general check-up. (especially check that he is not over-weight). If nothing is wrong with him, just give him heaps of love and kisses. Try to play with him but be very gentle not to scare him off. He might just be a very quiet Yorkie, but he will loosen up, and I believe ALL dogs loves to play, even if it is just 5min a day. You will get to know each other, and you will get to know his likes and dislikes (Tilly for instance only likes soft toys).

All of the love and patience you put in now will allow Bunker to fully reach his potential. While their personalities may be 'hard wired' he will still continue to blossom over time. Some Yorkies are naturally rambunctious, while others are more cuddle bums. :p
