Silky Terrier My mom called me not to long ago about a book she saw. She thought my Dice is a Silky Terrier because of his coloring. This was a first I've ever heard of Silky Terriers. What can you tell me about them and is my Dice considered one? Just curious... I love him none the less. :D |
A Silky Terrier is a different breed. They look very similar to a Yorkshire Terrier though. A Silky is a little bigger, can have more color variations besides the steel blue and tan of the yorkie, have longer ears, and a longer more wedge-shaped snout. There are other small differences too...just can't remember them off the top of my head. both of the yorkies in your avitar look like yorkies to me. The think about yorkies and silkies is a lot of people get them confused, and a lot of puppymills and backyard breeders intermix the two so a lot of our "yorkies" may in fact have silky in the lines somewhere. It can be really hard to tell sometimes |
Can you post a pic, please? Would love to see Dice up close and personal! |
go to www.akc.org you will be able to find a silkie on there..They have longer snouts, and their hair doesn't get as long as a yorkies..when they're very small, they almost look identical to a yorkie(some people could be very easily taken because of the resemblence), but, I can notice the difference when they get older. They usually weigh more, but, heck, there are a lot of silkies that weigh less than Haley(my 14 lber)..:) |
Suzy is ALWAYS getting confused with an Australian Silky. I live in Australia, so I guess people know about them more than Yorkies over here? Out of everyone she has ever met, 2 people have said she's a yorkie - the rest have said something along the lines of "oooh what a gorgeous Australian Silky!" Grrr. She's a purebred Yorkie. The only people who have picked it up were a random man walking past with his young son yesterday who said "Oh look at the beautiful Yorkshire Terrier!" and a man who used to breed them. |
I can see how the general population would mix up the 2 but don't doubt your Yorkie's yorkiness unless you aren't sure and he is a mix, but really he looks all yorkie to me It amazes me sometimes how many people have no idea what type of dog Bella is, they don't mistake her for a silky but they just don't know... and this is in pet stores where I would think the customers would know dog breeds better. Reminds me of when I was out walking my rather huge 1st black lab, he weighed 120lbs and was broad chested. He looked exactly like a black lab should just bigger then average and someone came up to me and asked me if he was a Rottie. I think I must have looked at them like they had a third eye in the middle of their forehead I was just dumbfounded. |
Silky"s I have a Silky Terrier, and a Yorki. The Silky is a different breed, there more calm and the breed size standard is larger. There hair dosn't get quiet as long. You can read about them in AKC, some people just don't now what there talking about. Your's sure look like Yorkies. Both breeds are great, but the Yorkie's have more SPUNK!:) |
2 Attachment(s) The first is a pic of my yorkie and the second is a pic of a silky that we owned at one time. Hardly tell the difference but there is. |
It is hard to tell silkies and yorkies apart when they are puppies IMO. By the look of your avatar, looks like you have yorkies. Did your babies come with papers? |

You can tell in their ears yorkies ears are more spread apart than the silkies |
