Welcoming my new puppy Hi Everyone! I have been reading all of your posts for a couple of weeks now and I must say your knowledge and kindness is amazing!! I am bringing home my new baby boy tonight and wanted some advice on where I should have him sleep. I am going to have him in a crate of course but am a little confused as to what part of the condo he should be in. I know some people say if you keep him in your bedroom he'll never want to leave. Do you think leaving him in a spare bedroom at night will be too lonely for him? Also, is crate training the best option for the little one? I know alot of people do it but I don't know if I could leave the poor thing all caged up for long periods of time. Any advice would be so helpful!! Many thanks in advance!! Best, Meredith |
Congrats on getting your new little boy and welcome to YT. Becareful it is addicting. LOL. Don't forget to post pictures too. About where he should sleep. In the long run where would you like him to sleep. With you in bed? In the same room? In the other room? I would suggest crate training just for the bathroom and getting use to everything purpose. They get to feeling comfortable in their crate and they know that is their space. I would check on him every couple hours if he is a crier and if he is a quiet one I would take him out at least every four hours to go to the bathroom, get something to eat and just play. I hope this helps. Good luck and I hope that you keep asking questions. |
Welcome to YT and goodluck with your new puppy! I think crate training is the best way to go, as long as you are able to let them out during the day. I started out with Lacy sleeping in a crate downstairs but she would cry and cry. Once I moved her crate to my bedroom, she seemed to do better. She would still whine some though. When she would do that I'd bang on the top of the crate - it makes a loud noise that they don't like but it doesn't hurt them since you are just hitting the top of the crate. She learned to stop whining pretty fast that way. You may have to take your puppy out during the middle of the night for a while, depending on how long they can hold it. But you'll eventually get to where you can sleep through the night. During the day, crates work fine too, but I wouldn't keep a puppy in one for more than like 4 hours at a time. So if you work, it would be best to come home at lunch to let your puppy out. If you aren't able to come home during the day, I'd get an X-pen. But I think crate training is best with being let out frequently if you can do it. good luck :) |
:welcome4: welcome to YT congrats on getting your new furbaby I bet you cant wait to pick him up.:wavey: cant wait to see pics |
Welcome to Yorkietalk! You chose the right place for your questions and needs. Congratulations on your new yorkie. You won't regret getting this breed because they are the best. Please post pictures when you get him! I'd say keep the crate in the bedroom with you because usually in the middle of the night, they will cry to go potty. They will go potty more frequently at every 3-4 hours I think. If he's in the other room, you won't be able to hear him. They are just like babies... you have to be prepared. I had to go through that puppy phase 3 times! They will wake you at the weirdest hours to go pee pee lol. You know what... it's all WORTH it though! Goodluck on your new pup! |

I think crate training is good if you don't want him sleeping with you, but I'd just block him in the kitchen or bathroom during the day. Welcome to YT. |

great minds think alike! a_jgonzalez, We are thinking about naming our new addition Toby too!! We're getting married next October and thought we should name him that and call him Toby for short!! What an awesome name!! |
Welcome to YT - So glad to have you here. on crate training - best route to go, they come to think of that as their own space. For some people that continues to be the best route even when they are older. Instead, I use a baby gate to secure my yorkies in the kitchen - they have more room that way to move around & they can use the pad if I'm gone too long for their bladders - although that rarely happens |
Welcome to yt and congratulations on your new furbaby. You've joined a knowledgeable group of people. |
