Is this safe? Hi everyone, I'm a new poster here, but have been reading so many topics I think I'm going cross-eyed! I will be getting my new puppy soonish and am trying to figure out how to keep her happy during the day, when I will be at work. Do you think it is ok for me to keep her in the kitchen with a gate? I live in an apartment and the kitchen is about 88 square feet. I'm asking this so I can keep her safely/happily confined (but with room to move) and honestly so I know that she wont be ruining the carpets while I'm gone. :D Will she be miserable? |
Luckily, my room is off of my kitchen, so this is what we do with Parker boy while we are gone (and home). They say its good to not give them free roam for many reasons when they are little. Don't get me wrong Parker comes in the living room with me, but only when I go with him and can monitor what he is doing. I guess a question you need to ask yourself is how are you going to train your new little guy. If you do potty pads (thats what we do) then I think its a great idea. A lot of people crate train (I don't know much about that) so in my opinion yes. Btw, welcome to YT!!! And congrats on the new baby!!!! :D :D :D :D |

kitchen One thing you might want to consider is the fact that most puppies chew, especially when left alone for a long period. You may get lucky and have one that isn't a chewer but if you have woodwork or wooden cabinets they love to chew on them. I have angled walls that are missing chunks of drywall and I am home almost all the time. My last 2 puppies have been great chewers. If I even leave the room for a few minutes they will start to chew. 2 x-pens put together make a good sized area if you don't want to crate train. |
For the first few months we used a pack and play like you buy for an infant and this was plenty of room for them ... then we graduated them to the kitchen , so they know its kitchen time when we work. I was also concerned about the chewing ... but they do fine ... they have a yorkie doormat which they have worked over pretty good though... |

They can also chew on refrigerator cords..My suggestion(I love these) is to get an xpen..this way, you can make it big enough for her water, food, bed, pee pad, toys, and safe for her where she can't chew on anything |
I like x-pens also. For me, that's the easieat way to potty pad train. You would be surprised at how little room they really need. Your puppy will spend most of the time sleeping while you are at work. Welcome to YT!:) |

i use a gated off kitchen for dexter at night and when we are out and he does fine. he has never chewed anything in there (except his toys...and possibly the cat ;) ) but we dont have any wires or anything like that exposed. that would definitely be a worry. I also work at home and take him most places with me when im out so he is never really left in the kitchen for too long except at night. |

Welcome to YT! That is excatly what we do with Max while my husband and I are at work. We leave him gated in the kitchen with all the toys he has. But most of the time he's asleep in there but he has room to move around. Just make sure he has enough toys as Max found that pulling out the linoleum tile was fun, so we had to re-do the whole kitchen floor in the apartment.:eek: |

Our condo is still under construction, but will be finished around March, so this is when we'll be getting her/him. Thanks so much for the info! |
That is a bit young to bring home a Yorkie. I would be very worried about leaving her for that long a time because of hypoglycemia. Maybe get a Yorkie sitter for a few weeks? Or leave her with the breeder for a few weeks longer? |
Is 8 weeks too young? I didnt know. Actually, it likely will be a bit longer because I dont know my move date...our development has been plagued with delays and even a fire, so I would be suprised if we moved in time. My breeder has already agreed to hold on until we are ready, so this wont be a problem. But this has brought up an interesting point...how old should she be when I bring her home? I was under the impression that 8 weeks is sort of the standard for breeders. |
12 weeks is preferrable. 10 weeks is acceptable. 8 or 9 weeks the breeder should have a really good reason to let them go. I wouldn't leave a Yorkie puppy home alone for more than a couple hours before atleast 12 or 14 weeks and then it is touchy. It is best to come home at lunch and check.:) Sorry for the sentence fragments. |
Possibly the reason she's letting her come to us sooner is because of my and my husbands work schedule? I work 9-5, he works half days half evenings, so puppy wont be left alone for long. I dont know though. Wow, I really dont want her to come to me too early...I think I will send her an email and ask to see if she can hold on to her until she's at least 12 weeks old. She told me she has no problem holding on to her for longer, but neither of us discussed a time line. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! |
welcome to YT - I hope you stay around - see how helpful & friendly everyone is :D You got great advice on crate training or x-pen when you're gone - then when they're older use the gate. Mine are gated into the kitchen when I'm gone and they do great/ That would be great if the breeder will keep your little one a bit longer. The socialization that occurs after 8 weeks with the mother and litter mates is very important |
kiele goes in the masterbath room for now! and then we she gets better at pottying she will get the master bedroom. and sooner or later get full run of the house when we are gone like skoshi does. they get full run of the house when we are home. |

Thank you everyone for the very warm welcome! I have no doubt you have heard this before, but you all are a very special group. I am really very happy to have found you. :D I know, I have a LOT to learn. Thankfully I still have months to get everything straight. I'm actually going to pick up a book this weekend to get some basics down. I've heard Yorkies for Dummies is a great place to start. I'm kind of going a step at a time and I'm sure when the time comes everything will (hopefully!) fall into place. |
