My Boy is Becoming A Man Well my boy is about 10 months now and his hair is getting about an inch off the ground, the wife and i are growing it out cuz thats one of the reasons i love the yorkies ya know? He is the most energetic little guy these days except when he is around mommy he loves to snuggle and chew on his bullstick, finally something he loves to chew on and great for his teeth. Last we had him weighed he was about 3.5-4 pounds, not sure but he is a healthy guy. although i did have a question. now as human boys do as i did they go through their whole puberty stage, ya rub the belly for more than 3 seconds he's ready for blastoff, same when he wakes up as i would expect cuz he is a growing boy, he lifts his leg when he pees sometimes now and he only marks when he is at the park...which i have taught him the past couple months is the only acceptable place to mark even though i am preparing for troubles on that front when we goto my parents for christmas but at this point he has been mark free in the house. so tell me...what should i expect next in a yorkie male. thank you and ill have to post a pic some time of him since we just started him on vellus hair care products he looks just amazing. |
:idontknow Sorry, I don't know anything about boy dogs. Just wanted to say :welcome4: |
Have you had him neutered yet? I have a 1 yr old male, but I have only had him a few months, but he has not changed. |
The wife and I never intend on breeding him but at the same time neutering him just seems wrong...I personally worry about him sticking another female while im not looking but that is why someone i always watching him when he is around other dogs. I would love not to but if he has any problems then we will. btw could i get info on the range in ages a boy should be neutered, it would be appreciated. Again id like not to but if its absolutely necessary then ill have to. |
I don't know either I have just girls dogs, but I neuter my male cat, I think other member here who has male dogs will help you.But I have read that neutering a male dog will help with aggression and marking too. Anyway welcome to yt is nice to have you here with us:animal-pa |

I saw someone write something like this once: would you rather be able to have sex, want to have sex, and NEVER be able to have sex (meaning you never get fulfill that urge) OR would you rather not feel the urge to have sex at all? |
well said Very well said. So given that yogi is 10 months now is it still to late or is it ever too late? I just ask for others Information, im pretty sure you have already convinced me that it needs to be done. thank you |

One small visiting the relatives advice: Belly band on your little guy because he will mark unknown territory. You will be able to relax and he can play without being in trouble. Good luck. Warmly, Deborah |
Q for You Ok so here is a question. Now obviously i can see how many owners would see marking as a bad bad thing for whatever reason but should he continue marking should i discourage it or i mean seriously...as long as he does it outside in the appropriate places i see no harm but id just like to hear others views on this. |

I agree with everything My Fair Lacy said. By neutering him now, you will not have to deal with the undesirable traits unneutered male dogs often start liking marking indoors. Once they start, often neutering doesn't stop it. He will also be much more pleasant to live with. If there is a female in heat nearby he will whine and carry on, plus you will always have to worry about him getting out. A male determined to get at a female can become an escape artist. He will be a much healthier, happier pet if you get him neutered. |
outstanding Awesome. He has done well thus far in other houses. he did pee in petco the other day a bit but he didnt lift his leg. i just think he got scared or something and let some out but i couldnt be sure. Thank you for all the help. |
If you're not going to breed, I suggest neutering..... We've had lots of male dogs, all neutered at 6 mos or whenever we got them. It protects their health as well as inhibits bad behavior. Our older dog (10 years old) marks outside only. He lifted his leg one time at my mom's house, got a good scolding, and has never done it since. Coby (9 months old) has lifted his leg only twice outside so far (once falling into the tree and once falling away from the tree, so he hasn't even tried it again yet). I don't know if it's a 6 month trait or a neutering trait, but all my pups have calmed down after neutering. They still have tons of puppy energy, but not that manic craziness. |
3 Attachment(s) HAHA my yogi does the same thing, he falls half the time. and coby looks like a steely eyed killer there hehe what a cute lil guy. here is my boy representing his favorite football team |
What a handsome little guy! |
First off let me welcome you to YT!!! I have a 17 month old male yorkie named Reece...he was a breeze to train to go outdoors..I never really thought of neutering him UNTIL at about 13 months he started marking ALL over the house...I was shocked and horrified..I couldnt keep up with all his marks and most I didnt know he did but could feel that he was wet down there so knew he had gone and had to search the house to find out where he did it...he progressively got worse and worse..he was marking more in the house than out of the house...I decided to try having him neutered...its been about a month and half..and he NEVER marks in the house now..only outside on every single tree or blade of grass that is too long lol...but no more belly bands no more leg lifting on corners..and I wish I had done it while he was young so I didnt have to go through it at all...its healthier and can lessen his chances of cancer too..another bonus!! His personality hasnt changed a bit!! Oh and wait until your guy starts humping..ugh..Reece dosent hump anything anymore...its been a great experience and I am sooooooooooooooo glad I did it!! Your little guy is adorable and I hope my information helped!!! :) Dawn |
" btw could i get info on the range in ages a boy should be neutered, it would be appreciated. Again id like not to but if its absolutely necessary then ill have to." Small dogs mature earlier than large breeds. For this reason, my vet recommended that I neuter Sammy when he was 6 months old. And they also would have charged me more if I had waited till after 6 monhts. I don't know if I was supposed to do it so early- folllowing the vets instructions. The way he explained it, not neutering possible effects- dominance and temperament because he will still be producing a lot of hormone, marking the house, wanting to run away if he smells a female in heat (I know we all watch our babies!) agressive with other dogs, territorial (I have children so the vet told me he might become "jealous" and territorial of either one of us and react in a not so nice way to the others in the house, and last but not least, the possibility of testicular cancer. basically unless your planning to breed him, there really is no reason not to neuter him. Besides dogs have no emotional bond to "manhood" like people do. Its your choice, again, I'm no expert and I am sure there are other people on this board who have not had their yourkie neutered. Good luck |

Neutering |
My guys mark outside, but not inside. It seems like it's ok to me as long as he knows to only go outside. Mine are both neutered. |

What a cutie he is! And it sounds like he has you and your wife wrapped pretty well :) Everyone here has given great advice so I just wanted to say hello and welcome to YT! |
Both my boys are neutered and I still have some issue's with marking. But what I really wanted to stress to you was this......I was GIVEN, a 3 pound male yorkie that had NOT been neutered. His owners gave him to me because they could not keep in in the yard or in any fence. He ran the neighborhood like a tom cat. He was neutered the day after he came to live with me and was the best boy ever. So, in this case, it was better for his safety, because they lived in the city and lots of bad things could've happened to him. Good luck with your decision. |
