DNA testing Ive been hearing a lot about DNA testing and wondering what is it used for on our pets where its done, how much, is it needed. |
I know UKC does it, so I'd think AKC does it. If I remember right it cost me about 50.00. |
whats it for I know what DNA is but what is it used for in the dog world |
To tell you who the parents are of a dog...so you know the papers you have on that dog are accurate. It can also identify breeds in a mixed dog. |
cool Ive heard of people switching papers |
I have my males and some of my females done.. it was when I had it done $35.00 for a prepaid kit and $40 for non prepay. It is used for a male that has sired a lot of litters akc wants to have his dna on file.. and so a breeder can say this is he pups father.. I have mine on file just incase a pup gets lost I can prove that that its my dog cause I have their dna and IF its not my dog HOW would I have its DNA..KWIM?? its done in your home.. you swab the pup/dogs cheek and mail the swab back in the lil thing they give you to send it back in... its easy |
I think AKC might do it when a dog wins a show. My Maggie's litter mate won somewhere and in doing the DNA testing the AKC even pulled Maggies papers for awhile. They did the DNA again and reinstated her, not that is mattered either way to us because she is our pet and not going to be used for mating. |
Are you asking about DNA testing for breeders or for pet owners? DNA testing is now available for pet owners through your vet. It's under $100 and it will tell you if your dog is purebred or not and if he isn't, what breeds he's mixed with. |
AKC has always done it on stud dogs. If they sire a certain number of litters in a year or a certain number in a lifetime, it is required. My studs are DNA'd and I haven't even used one of them yet. AKC sent a free kit then I got the DNA by swabbing the inside of his mouth and sent it back with a $40. check. it took several weeks to get the certificate back. |
would any of you recommend testing a dog for no real reason at all just curiosity |
I've thought about it. What's the harm? I have a rescue who looks purebred Yorkie, but I've always wondered. I might try it some day. |
that is true no harm it is just a swab:aimeeyork :animal-pa ;) |
I am going to do the Wisdom Panel with Ellie to see if she is purebred. It is a blood test. |
now what does the blood test reveal that the dna wouldn't?:aimeeyork |
Swabbing the inside of the mouth for AKC matching the puppy with the parents, I believe. Wisdom panel tells you what breeds are in your dog. It show about 130 of the 150 or so AKC breeds, so you can see if your breeder lied to you about your dog being purebred. |
