Fireplace wood This may seem like a no brainer question... How can I keep all my little furbutts from chewing on the wood that I keep next to the fireplace? I keep a fire's worth inside so it will be dried out for the next fire. Obviously I could cover it with something but I'm thinking that would look pretty tacky plus it would be a good place for any bugs to hide. I would freak out if I took the cover off and bugs came out to attack me! If I sprayed it with Bitter Apple, would that give off harmful fumes when burned? Any suggestions? I don't want to have to be running to the vet cause one of them has a chunk of wood stuck somewhere inside them. |
I know I have seen wood in a metal bucket. that would keep them off and look kinda cute too ;) |

Amy loves to make mulch out side. she don't eat it just chews and Mulches it LOL |
I don't know but if you figure it out please let me know I keep finding the girls chewing on little bits of bark I'll take it away from them and a little while later I will find them with another piece:rolleyes: |
dumber question... Will it hurt them if they do chew on it? |
Well I think ALL of mine love to chew on it. They don't just chew it, they swallow it too and I'm afraid they will swallow a larger piece and get it stuck in their throat or intestinal tract. Plus it makes a huge mess on the carpet! |
Do you have any problems with the fireplace making their hair dryed out and staticy(is that a word?) |
I do Dry and staticy hair .... the fireplace makes me and the dogs have it... and they shock me every time I touch them... drives me and them (yelping away) all winter!!! |
I had the same problem with Lucy trying to eat the wood. I bought a large wicker basket, very stylish and keeps her out of it. Garden Ridge has some nice ones to choose from. You can get them in different colors. You can even get them with lids. I hope this helps. |
Gizmo has been chewing on the fireplace wood as well. It's almost a constant battle. Wood chips, mulch, toilet paper, paper towels...what is it with wood products?? Does he need more fiber? (Just kidding!);) |
My 2 love the mulch from the garden, which scares me. Maybe you could spray the wood with vinegar? This is something that has worked well to keep my cats off the counter: http://www.smarthome.com/6207.html It's pricey, but lasts awhile. It mades a loud PSHHT! spray of air, and is motion sensitive. A few scares and they get the picture. Now... how would it work on a Yorkie? ;) My little stinkers would get so ticked off at it, and likely attack the can... so I dunno. Oh, my one dog likes to chew on wicker baskets. Not to make it more complicated, but you might want to keep an eye on that if you go the basket route. Good luck! Teresa |

LOL. Sounds familiar. Jolie (my Maltese) grabs anything she can. She even goes into my purse (if I don't zip it) and takes paper out of there. I am training her to bring what she has to me instead of scolding her and it's working. She is a little hesitant still, but she usually brings me what she has stolen. ;) Only problem is, she is teaching the other dogs to do it! |
