Is my Dog Traumatized? OK about a year and a half ago on my birthday my mother-in-law was having a dinner party. I showed up with my Sophie. One of her Asian male friends said "oh look at the pup" he then proceeded to pick her up by the loose skin at the nape of her neck. She cried out in pain and I swear I almost jumped the guy. I freaked out snatched my dog, I was so pissed I started to shake and asked what the hell was wrong with him. He said in China that's how they pick their dogs up. I told my MIL he was never allowed to touch my dog again. Since then she will not get near a strange man. She'll back up and bark and won't let them near her. She has no problem with male children just male adults except my immediate male family members she's fine with them. If a strange woman comes up to her to pet her she melts like butter. Was my dog traumatized because of this one incident? It just amazes me how she can tell the difference between a male and female adult even by being a couple of feet away is it their smell or their voice? I'm not too sure. |
Poor baby, I have a friend that rescue a yorkie and she is afraid of man too:(, maybe have a male that you trust, like a friend or family member to give her a favor treat or play with her, sorry I couldn't be more help to you:confused: |
aww...poor baby. Sounds like she doesn't trust men because of what happened. Lacy isn't used to being around men so she is usually a little wary of them until she gets to know them well. |
I'm sorry this happened to your Sophie. It must have really upset her if she's still frightened. |
Poor baby! I would've practically jumped the guy, as you almost did - what an idiot. While it may be okay for young puppies to be picked up by the scruff, it is NOT okay to pick up dogs well past weaning-age in this manner bc their body weight is re-distributed in such a way that it is painful for the dog - so no wonder the little honey cried out! The only way to overcome this is to train her and extinguish the reaction to the stimuli. You'd need a willing male friend who you could work her with - you could all get down and the floor, help her go to the male (like you're all playing), give treats first when she just approaches him, then give treats when she gets really close to him, then give treats when she lets him touch/pet her - etcetera. It may take a while, and more than one male - but she can rebuild her trust. Good luck! |
Picking them up by the scruff of the neck..I've picked mine up like that before, if you know how to do it, it doesn't hurt them. |
