Christmas Tree Water Hello all, I was just wondering is it safe for my 7 month old yorkie to drink christmas tree water. I usually get a real tree, but am contemplating an artificial one for the sake of my little ones health. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
I am glad you brought this up! I thought about getting a real tree this year myself, and that is something I didn't even think about. I know my little Susanah would be under there drinking away - not because she's thirsty, but because its something she knows I wouldn't want her to do. lol  |
I found this: http://ny.urbanhound.com/houndHealth...er.asp?QID=403 Christmas Trees Christmas trees and wreaths (pine, spruce, balsam fir) do not contain poisonous chemicals per se, but eating them (or their artificial relatives) can certainly cause an upset stomach—that is, vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs often will try to drink from Christmas-tree stands, so don’t doctor the water with anything to keep the tree fresh. The water also is a breeding ground for bacteria and molds that can upset your dog’s stomach, so it’s wise to fashion a cardboard lid for the stand to keep your dog from drinking the water. My dogs forget all about it once the skirt is on.;) |
Thank you very much for the insight. This is my first Christmas with my baby and I am trying to make sure that I do everything in my power to keep her safe ;) |
I don't know if it's really all that good for them, and especially if you add the drops that's supposed to keep the tree living longer. One time we did buy a real tree and added something to the water, but before the tree was put down into the tree stand, I used a large cone (I saved from having a large male dog neutered) around the base. It fit really nice over the stand and I could just loosen the tie when I had to add more water. |

We just don't put the chemicals in the water that make it last longer! Bella drank the tree water last year it was kinda funny we would be watching tv and all of a sudden we would hear (shlerp shlerp ) and we would just add more water so she didn't drain it ! lol She was just fine:) |
I wouldn't think it would hurt them all that much...think about all the things they probably drink and eat when you look away lol |
I'm glad I have an artifical tree, but thanks for that good information. |
We've always had a real tree and never had a problem. Put a skirt around the tree and don't put anything in the water. If they go near the base of the tree and skit then spray it with bitter apple. |
We already put up our tree, a real one, and Madeleine hasn't paid any attention to it. This is her first Christmas and I was for sure she would be all curious. The only thing she has done is hide her toys under the tree skirt  |
could you maybe wrap the stand where the water is with aluminum foil or saran wrap so it could be removed to water the tree. You could cover that with a tree skirt to hide the foil or wrap. That way if you have a dog that will move the tree skirt they would still something covering the water. |
okay this makes my decision easier were getting a artificial tree lol |
I thank everyone for their help. I will get a real tree and buy the plastic cone shaped thingy to cover the water. My tyra is definitely a busybody :D |
