Opinions on a second yorkie?? We currently have one 2 year old yorkie male sweetie who is the center of our household. Lately, I have been thinking about adding another yorkie -- probably a female to our home. I'd like Cody to have a sister and a playmate. (Cody is already "fixed" and the new puppy would also at a later date.) This may sound silly, but I'm just not sure how Cody would react to this. He is very attached to the family (of course!) and particularly to me. Would this hurt his feelings adding another dog to the family or would he enjoy it? We would NEVER ignore him after the new puppy arrives and I know that I would introduce the new puppy properly. (I am a MOM afterall and I've been through this!!) :D Can those of you that have added a 2nd yorkie to your homes after a couple years help with some advice -- good or bad. I'll take any and all feedback, please. What problems did you experience? Thanks!! Cody'sMom :aimeeyork |
hmmm I have had people have to return puppies because their dog wouldn't accept the new puppy. But not many. My mom is thinking of getting a new maltese to add to her 2... and she is going through the same deal. When she was up here they both took to one of my males... Casper. I am thinking I may give him to her for Christmas because for both her girls to not growl and carry on at a new baby is very unusual. My dad is still saying no on the boy thing though so we will see. Maybe you can bring a visiting dog over and see how he reacts to your loving on another dog. |
Hmm... when I added my second one, whom is the boy, my girl liked him because she was still young. Then I added my 3rd when the older two were 1 1/2. They accepted her very well, but it does cause some jealousy. Goodluck on your new little girl! |
I added a 10-year-old rescue to our family when my first was 2 years old. Both are males, and it was a rocky start. My 2-year-old turned into a snob when the 10-year-old didn't want to play rough with him. And then he turned into a toy hoarder. But they've been brothers for almost two years now, and I can honestly say they get along great. I think you would have even better luck with a spayed female. As long as you can spend time with them and you're not getting a second one for the sole reason of keeping the first one company, do it! Two is better than one. |
Hi We have just recently got alfie who is almost 10 weeks old, already having jamie (jack russell x beagle) who is 9. We had the same aprehension also about getting another dog. Jamie and Alfie get on great, although the odd time Jamie has let Alfie know he was here first, just one woof and Alfies been told. Lol. Alfie has given Jamie a new lease of life, Jamie will search for alfie if he can not see him. I treat my boys exactly the same as each other. Two hands, two treats and two dogs is my motto. Good Luck x |
I have been wondering the same great thread ...for me anyways!:p |
I added my 2nd yorkie about 1 month after I got my first, they were both puppies at the time.. and just recently, we moved in with my husband and his parents and they have a bigger dog about 3-4 years old and they actually accepted each other, the boys didn't fight at all, just a growl here and there once in awhile, but they are all best buds now :) I like having 2 yorkies because they keep each other company when i go out to work/errands etc :) i guess it depends on the dog though, but like someone mentioned above if you have the time to spend with them both, i think it's okay :) |
My husband and I are recently thinking of giving our 3 yr old a brother, we're also going through the same thing. We recently moved and where as before we lived with my mother-in-law who worked during the day and we worked nights so it was a perfect arrangement she was never alone. She's by herself at night and we're thinking of getting another so she won't be so alone. |
Welcome to YT!!! :) |
I have two yorkies, Mindy is 7 months and Bear is 16 weeks. Bear came about 3 months after Mindy. Mindy had the runs for the first few days when we brought Bear home. She really wasn't sure about him at first and I did consider bringing him back to the breeder because I was worried sick for Mindy. After about 5 days they became the best of friends BUT Mindy is very jealous of Bear when it comes to our attention and she is also the pack leader. Boy if he pisses her off she lets him know it. We hear a yelp here and there. The one thing I do miss is having Mindy lying on top of me all the time. Now that she has Bear all she wants to do is play and they are very hyper. I'm sure they will settle down once they get a little older. It's worth having two for their sake. Gives them a playmate and we have double the love. Good luck with your decision. |
Most of the time , Its not the dog reactions to another one that is a problem but the owners that anticipate reactions from the dog . |
Hi - I added a second Yorkie when Lillie was about 9 months old. At first Lillie was a little stressed and did not eat much, but after 3 weeks - they love each other. They clean each others ears and play chase. In my opinion adding a second one was a great decision. |
I added Cali at 9 weeks and had an 8 year old Pom. My pom was pretty territorial and not much for interacting with us, but she accepted Cali with no problems and Cali pretty much left her alone, preferring to be with us. Then when Cali was 1 1/2 years old I brought in Pixie who was 13 months at the time and a real spitfire. Pixie had been raised with other adult yorkies at the breeders in a large pen. SO Pixie was very much attuned to other dogs and play fighing. SHe fell in love with my Pom who was 12 lbs and is attached to her side or front literally all the time. Maya has become much more friendly since adding Pixie and even though she is in bad health seems so much happier with Pixie around. Cali my other Yorkie was pretty upset for a month or so and would hang out a lot with my dtr, still does. But Pixie picks on her all the time and Cali goes back for more when I stop her so I think that is there way of playing. So I have been very happy with each additional one I have added, and would add another If i could afford to. I think most times it works out and you just have to give them time. Also trying to make sure you don't get to alpha dogs helps. I say go for it |
we just got a second we just got Gabby,9 wks, 2 days ago, and we have a 4 yr. old boy, neutered. he seems jealous and I am there whenever they are together. Hoping it works out. |
A lot will depend on the personality of your dog. When we got Boog we wanted a friend for him but he never would accept another dog and believe me, we tried...he loved people but not other animals. So, we raised him as an only fid and he was pretty spoiled but I always wished he would have accepted another Yorkie into the house. Before you ask...yes, we had to keep Boog...we absolutely loved him and he had so many health issues that I would have never let him go to anyone else. When we got Jo we waited about 6 months before getting Riley...I think Jo was about 1 when we brought Riley home. He accepted him, they are best buddies and they depend on each other but I have seen some changes in Jo. He hasn't changed behavior wise (marking and things like that) but for a long time he wasn't as loving as he was in the beginning...he became pretty independant. It's just been recently (2 years later) that he has returned to his 'old' self and wants to be a lap dog again. Now that I've brought home the Biewer girls Jo seems to be an old hand at acceptance but Riley is having a hard time. Riley wasn't around other puppies when he was young, he didn't know how to play and is afraid of other dogs (even Jo sometimes) so the puppies kind of freak him out. I think it will all work out in the end though...we're already seeing progress after just a week. Is it possible for you to puppy sit for another dog for a few days to get a better idea of how your dog will react? Everything always seems great in the beginning but into the second or third day you'll see more than you saw on the first day. Good luck in your decision... |
