Afraid of cars? Does anyone else have a problem of their puppy being scared of cars? I have a hard time taking Riley for walks because he is so afraid of cars...moving or not. He is more scared of moving ones but if he sees a parked car it scares him also. I took him to a park today that has a trail that goes around the baseball field and one part of it is closer to the street..he did ok but walked the whole time with his tail between his legs. Just the sounds of cars makes him stop and hesitate..I am wondering if taking him here every day after work for a walk would get him used to the sounds of the cars and maybe not make him so scared of them? Anyone else have this problem? He needs the exercise so I want to be able to get him out more...:) |
Anyone:( |
When I first got Jesse he was deathly afraid of traffic. Only moving. Not parked. He would stand in one spot no matter how much I coaxed him, and would shake uncontrollably. It's important to find a balance when dealing with a fear. You don't want to make it worse. Do not, under any circumstances, baby the dog! No cooing, no whiny-voice. You do not want to teach him that he is right to be afraid. What I did with Jesse was simply take a step back. We started off in the park where there were no cars around. The more confidant he became, the closer we went to traffic. If he would freeze up, I would simply sit down and let him hang out until he got distracted or bored and started sniffing and walking around again. Slowly we worked our way up to side streets. Now, he still doesn't love busy main roads. He does amazing on smaller streets, though. Garbage trucks still frighten him for some reason, though. |
I would continue to take him, so he would get use to it. Don't make a big deal over it when he gets scared. Just keep walking. |
I've been taking Madeleine in the car with me since I got her, so she has no fear of cars or traffic. I think the more you introduce him to it the more comfortable he will become. Good luck :) |
Phoebe was like that, now she not even afraid of big trucks, Shayna also is getting better, will see on Melody:rolleyes:, just keep walking your baby untill they get used to it if not try a stroller first or a carrier and see how that work out. Dogs need to go for a walk, just my oppinion:animal-pa |
walk them on the sidewalk and praise them as you go along ... make it a fun time .... |
Lacy would chase cars if she could. when one drives by she barks at it and pulls at her leash like she wants to go attack it |
Suzy was afraid of cars at first, parked or moving, but she just got used to them. I just used to keep walking calmly along and make her follow me. Now she's used to them, but she's still not used to trucks as they're very noisy. When she sees/hears one she sits down and looks at me until it passes then continues walking. Just give it time. He'll adapt. The more often you walk him the faster he'll get used to it. Good luck! |
Jewels isnt afraid of cars but one road we walk by is kinda busy and she is afraid of trucks because their so loud. |
We get our last set of shots this AM so I'll be able to start walking Parker, he still isn't crazy about inside the car...but I dont know about walking outside of one!! Good luck!!:) |

but she's gotten better... |
Thank you all for your replies! I will keep taking him and get him used to it. It is so fun to watch your puppies experience the different sounds and have them learn new things. He did meet a new friend at the park yesterday...a cute little white dog named Soda...I think it will be a good thing for both of us! Thanks again!:D |
Horatio doesn't like moviing vehicles. The closer they are the louder he barks and carries on. The big trucks that zoom by on the road actually scare him and he tries to run from them. And, we aren't close to them...the noise is enough. |
