brought home my puppy last night I am so thrilled. I just got a yorkshire terrier yesterday. She is the most beautiful little girl!!!! I love her so much already. She is a tiny little thing. She is 15 weeks old and weighs 1.8 pounds. She is so sweet and gentle. I am wondering one thing--- her wonderful breeder told me she is a finicky eater and is she ever. She is a little thin and didnt eat her dry food so I mixed a small amount of wet food in and she ate a good amount. Should I keep this up? I have nutrical that I give her too. Im just a bit nervous with her being so tiny and she is picky foodwise. Thanks for any info and advice. Oh I havent picked out a name. Ive got a few and Im just kind of watching to see what fits. I have Stella, Lola, Daisy, Molly, Bindi, Katie- I will post her picture as soon as my husband give me the digital camera THANK YOU |
Congratulatons. I will advise you to mix puppy dry food with the wet. Even if you have to dampen the dry a little. However, she needs to be OFF the wet food. Wet food will rot their teeth. Maggie was exactly like your baby when she was younger. I almost ruined her with human food. She wouldn't eat anything. YT members got me on the right track. Now Maggie eats dry only. I started her out on Royal Canin 33 Mini puppy food. It is very tiny pieces. I have never seen puppy dry food in such small pieces. Maggie loves it. You might try it. The members here told me to put the dry food down and she WILL eat. It took a day of no eating, but after that---get out of her way---she's heading for the kitchen. |
Welcome to you and a big congratulations on your new little girl. Yeah for you on trying wet food to her dry to help her eat. That is wonderful. Since she is so tiny and weighs so little if she wants the wet/dry by all means go for it!! I love the names you have picked out so far! And look forward to seeing pictures of her. :p |
Congrats! On Your New Puppy :D I Also Give My Baby Dry Puppy Food. I Bought Her Science Diet They Also Have The Small Bites ;) |
Hi and welcome!!! Congratulations on your little girl! I would just keep feeding her as you are doing since she is so little. Then maybe later on after she has adjusted you can get her to switch to dry. Good luck. |
Congrats on your puppy and welcome to YorkieTalk! You will love it here. Post a picture so we can all oooohhh and aaaahhhh over your new baby!! |
aww only a pound and a half. she must be tiny :) i cant wait to see some pictures... don't worry if she doesnt eat that much if shes so small. my nugget is just over 3lbs and he eats less than a 1/2 cup a day. just make sure she eats! congrads on the new pup! |
I fed Copper wet and dry food in the beginning and gradually weaned him off as he started eating well. He is now only on the dry food. Good luck...enjoy your baby girl. |
Congrats...you are very lucky to share your love with your new little puppy!!! I would tell you to make sure she is eating, even if it a little wet and dry...without eating she will get sick...we have two very picky eaters and we still put just a little bit of wet in their dry to get them to eat, as they have gotten older we have just put less and less until hopefully one day they won't need any!!! Yorkies are very stubborn and want they want, so just give her love and time and she will come around.... |
Congratulations on your new little girl and welcome to YorkieTalk!! She sounds like a doll, and I really like all the names you picked out ;) |
Congrats!!! CONGRATS!!! I got my little boy on Thursday night so I know how excited you are!!! Good luck with everything and welcome to YT!!! :) |
That's wonderful, a new puppy. I had mine strickly on Science Diet Lamb and Rice formula when they were puppies. A little one like that probably will take one nugget at a time and likely will play with it before eating it. It isn't like the commercials when the dog is running and gulping food. I stayed with dry food for several reasons, tooth decay, runny stools to name two. However, it is so important for her to eat you might try one or two Cheerios a day as a treat. When mine were small I actually broke the Cheerios in half. I am not a fan of wet food, but the experts on this site will give you good advice. All the names you have are good but one of our members lost her Molly, if she doesn't object, it might be a nice gesture to name yours Molly in her memory. Just a thought. |
First of all congrats on the new baby! She will bring you lots of love for the years to come! Second I agree that you should use science diet puppy food Linus was the same way, and he scarfs down his food now! |
Natural balance You might try the natural balance roll dog food. It is not as soft as the wet, just slice and dice and mix with the dry. That is what I feed my boys all the time, also try warming the food just for a few seconds in your microwave, finicky eaters seem to like it warmed up a bit (both wet, roll and dry). Good luck. |
Congrats on your new baby. What an exciting time? You'll love her.... I brought my Yorkie home two weeks ago, and it has been so wonderful! Please post pics so we can all enjoy her! |
Congrats on your new baby! I love the name Lola! |
Congratulations on your new baby. I feed mine wet food, but I'm going to try to start adding a little dry food everyday to see if she'll eat it. She is awful picky too. |
Congrats~ Congrats on that sweet baby yorkie girl! ;) I brought home Sophie two weeks ago....we love her sooooooo much~ :D Enjoy your baby....we are looking forward to pics! :p |
Thank you for the warm welcomes everyone! I am weaning her from the wet to the dry almost completely. I found if I sit on the floor with her she eats the dry kibble. She feels so much more secure if I am close to her rather than a few feet away. I did notice that she was sniffing the food bowl while I was sitting down a few feet away so I think pretty soon she will feel confident in her new home. Im STILL unsure of a name. I was soooo sure I would name her Stella or Lola. But Im not sure if either fit her. I will get a pic of her up very soon. And she will have a name too. Congratulations on all the new puppies! Thank you for all the help too. |
Susan, congratulations on your new baby!!!! I am a total bad mommy (and breeder)..all 7 of mine still get their daily rations put in a plastic bag and about 1/4- 1/3 of a can of puppy food mooshed in with it. There is no way I could ever with a clear conscience suggest you do anything other than what you are doing. I really believe we can get hung-up on the "right" thing to do and forget that these babies are individuals as much as humans. Later, you might gradually change the food prep, but for now, keep that babies's tummy happy.. |
Congratulations!!!! and welcome to the club where your money and time is gone due to the overwhelming love and dedication to your FURBABY!!!! Don't we all suffer from this. I personnally do not mind spending my money on outfits for Meeko and Molly versus buying myself something. Anyways, I hope you and your Furbaby adjust nicely and have fun along the way. ;) |
CONGRATULATIONS !!! To add to the many good posts and advise.... The tiny bites are great for yorkies - I used to mix a little gerber baby food in Chanels DRY food when she was that small and also a tiny bit of cottage cheese... Also - Keep some Nutracal on hand for a "Just in Case" and watch her for low blood sugar - the signs of that are lethargy and shaking...you'll find LOTS of reading here about that - |

As for a name, I might suggest babynames.com You can search by meaning, personality, nationality... All kinds of things. I find that it takes me a while until I find one that fits, too! Congratulations, and keep us posted!! :) |
Yorkie Congrats on your new puppy! Can't wait to see your pics! |
