Expressing an ANUS??? I was reading some previous posts about grooming and one person mentioned while at the groomer's their yorkie had the anals expressed. I know what an anus is but getting it expressed? What is that? |
Sorry, can't help you there. I'd be curious to know what that is. I'm sure some of our more seasoned members can answer that for us. |
If the scent sacks get too full on each side of the anus it is very uncomfortable for a dog. It rubs its butt on the ground or bite round it. Some vets put a finger inside the anus to express the fluid. OUCH Comic had a bit of blood showing once :( I researched and do it myself if need be. I would just gently pinch the area and the sacks empty. I would do this in the bath tub because it squirts out. The scent is like rotten mushrooms and looks kind of like diarrhea. It is instant relief for the dog. I have not need to or attempted to do this on Mya. |

But thanks for the info.. |
do you think all groomers do that ? cause i just took my puppy like a month ago |
I have had a bezillion Yorkies and only had one female who was retired before I bred her--She had a fault. Anyhow, the new mom took her to the doc and doc said she probably needed her glands expressed since she never had it done. A terrific infection occured and it seemed so painful and she was on antibiotics. I made them bring her home to me and gave them their check back. Since then, I have never needed to express those anal glands. The thought is if the dog eats properly and has formed stools their anal glands will do their job of lubricating the anus when the little "terd" comes out. I never thought of them as Scent glands. I gotta do more research... |
We had a cocker that needed it done regularly and it BLEW me out of the room - I always had the vet do it - it wasn't painful for her - but the smell would gag you. |
I saw that being done on that show, Show Dog Moms & Dads or something like that. He was pinching the dog's anus in a certain way and stuff was squirting out! It was totally gross lol and some got on his shirt and even the camera man didn't want to get close. He said it smelled something terrible LMAO!! I think I will leave that part to the vet unless I knew someone experienced who showed me how to do it if it was absolutely necessary. |
My blue heeler hates the vet. She doesn't even have to rub her butt on anything. Just take her to the vet and she will do a job on his office. I feel bad, because his clinic stinks like rotten rubber after Pepper get done with it. I really thinks she laughs all the way back to the truck. |
My friend told me her yorkie was scooching her butt on the floor alot,so when she took it to the vet,the vet suggested it.At the time she told me I thought she was just making it up.I thought that was soo gross.I take them to the same vet and if the vet don't say anything than I'll let it pass.UCK :p |
So far Gucci hasn't need her anus glands express. I hope she never does, cause Im not doing it. If she ever needs that I will let the vet do it. |
I have heard from my groomer, who has been in the business for over 22 years, that once you start cleaning the anal glands that it will be an on going process. She said that she does not ever really do it unless it is absolutely necessary because from her experience after you do it the first time it needs to be done regularly. I don't even know if she has done it to my girls yet. |
I always ask my vet to check to see if it needs to be done and he has never needed to do it to Tino or Bunny. Its definitely something that 1) would never do... I have a horrible gag reflex and just the thought of it is too much for me and 2) I would have the vet do if they needed it. Mine have never scooted across the floor unless they had something left from going potty, so I haven't ever worried abt it, I heard that is the first sign. |
