Help...Eddie may be constipated?? For the last two days Eddie, who is 9 weeks old, has been constipated, trying to have a bowel movement and when he does he yelps, screams, cries. The "poop" is a bit bigger than I am used to seeing and very firm. Any suggestions to soften it up. He is on puppy food that the breeder had him on when I got him and he seems to like it. This is just new. He has also thrown up twice in the last three days, just a little. Otherwise he is full of fun and playing great. He is a sweet pup and is doing good on the housetraing. Looking forward to hearing advise....................Teigan |

Has he had eaten anything different at all? Or did he sneak something on a walk or from someone's plate? I've found that some fruits, like apples can soften their poop. Just don't give them too much of course. Hope Eddie gets better soon! |

I had the same problem with my puppy, vet said it was common with small breed dogs and to give her a little canned pumpkin, it really did the trick. Hope this helps and your baby feels better :) |

i was told to give my yorkie canned pumpkin if he had diareah because is HARDENS the stool  |

I found this article, I guess it works for both constipation or diarrhea, even works for cats :D If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. Yes canned pumpkin in its pureed form (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is a fantastic stool softener which makes it a good natural remedy for constipation. It often helps with upset stomach or indigestion for both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fibre and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet's food often gets the system moving in no time. Dogs will occasionally want to eat it directly and that's fine too. Sometimes though, finicky cats and dogs won't touch it no matter what you do. On the opposite end of things is diarrhea. Since the dietary fibre in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to a cat or dog that has diarrhea. Some pet owners report that it firms up their pet's loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. Again one to two teaspoonfuls is all that is needed. |

wow roxie, thanks for sharing..... i thought i was going nuts there for a second.....lol |

Thanks I will try the canned pupmkin, hope it works, I'll keep you posted. Just wanted to say this is a great site to get heip, I don't feel so alone in this as it is new for me to have a young pup and a Yorkie.....Teigan |

M puppy had this It is very scary. Turned out it was a grooming issue. He needed to be clipped because the stool was caught in the fur and he sat in it and it made a plug. Yuck! |

I am glad everyting came out alright. LOL |

Love a story with a happy "ending!" |

Eddie is fine now Thanks for the advise about the pumpkin. He loved it and it worked! No more crying while he has a poop. Thanks again...........Teigan |

Butt .... for the hard stools ... there is always Asian Pear if they won't eat the pumpkin. Also, for the hair ... Dr. Lucy showed us how to make little "poneytails" ... just loosely band the tail and both "hips". It's so cute ... Toto looks so prissy!!! ;) |

Bettyeanne That's very interesting! Do you band the tail just past the docked part? Also, the hips, JUst the outside hair? That is really interesting to say the least. I am letting Snoodles hair grow out, and was wondering about the poop issue! Thanks! Pat |

i am also curiouse about how you do this , can you post a picture of it or explain alittle more about it. sometimes my yorkies get alittle stuck in their hair and then i have to wash them. so please let me know . thanks , lynne, mo , macey, abbey |

The little ponytails are just the tail hair just past the end of the little nub ... on the hips I just brush it until I have all that looks like it will get in the way of her poop [her hair is so long, I usually gather an inch or two wide at the part on her back and about halfway down her leg and just brush it up and put a rubber band around it a couple of inches from the part]! From the rear it looks like three little ponytails and when she runs/walks she prisses and they bounce! It's sooo cute! All the hair around her little "poopie place" is cropped really short with scissors [we don't use a razor anywhere on Toto because that stubby hair causes her to scratch!] I will try to get some pics of it when Papa is here to distract her ... she always wants her face in the camera! ;) |

THANKS! It sounds like it will be cute! Will let you know how it works once she grows out. It sure does take awhile, doesnt it? |

What a great way to keep the hair away. If/when Hercules' hair gets long I'll try to remember this. By the way, Toto really is adorable! :) |

That helped enormously! Now I see what you were trying to say! What a great idea! Thank you so very muich for going to the trouble to take pictures and post it here. It takes a while and I sure appreciate it! Your dog looks like she has the same coloring as mine! She's a cutie! Looks like she may be a little smaller though. What does she weigh? Mine is around 3#. Haven't had her in the vet lately so not right up to date. Pat |

Thanks, Pat!! Hope the little ponytails work for your baby too! I took Toto to see Dr. Lucy while I was home on the 21st and she weighed an amazing 4.5 lbs.!! This little chubby girl shocked us all. She got her boosters and was pronounced as healthy as a horse! The weight is becoming a problem ... Dr. Lucy said "no more weight"! Our breeder and vet both never expected her to weigh 3 lbs. but she just simply doesn't get enough exercise. She also has begun to flatly refuse any meat! She won't eat her Natural Balance and very little of her dry Yorkie 28. All she wants is vegetables. She also doesn't want the Gerber Graduates vegetables anymore .... wants fresh cooked!! Little brat! :) I don't cook, so my husband takes a great deal of pride in saying "she doesn't cook for us, but she cooks for Toto!" If we only ate 1/4 cup of veggies sprinkled with a little parm per day, it would be OK. She also gets a little veggie pasta, cottage cheese, pear, apple and a little sweet potato occasionally. Dr. Lucy said it's OK if she doesn't want the meat as long as she eats her veggies!! ;) Thanks for the compliment, bld2751! Toto is a sweetheart ... but we are a tad prejudiced!! ;) |

I know about being a little prejudice bettyeanne! I'm completely partial to my Hercules, but I can also appreciate other's cute yorkies. It gives me a good idea of how to try to groom Hercules as he grows older. I love talking here about Hercules because I feel like I'm crazy when I talk to friends or people at work. Hercules is my life and my baby and at least everyone else here loves their babies like I love mine! :) |

:I was wondering if a little apple was okay for them. Mine gets maybe 4 slices as big as my little fingernail in the morning, and about the same of banana at noon. I was concerned if the sugar in them would harm them. It's hard to believe your dog is over-weight. She doesn't seem to be eating fatty food! But then, elephants eat grass and stuff and look how big they are! Hee! Hee! I am very prejudiced too. I never watched a dog so close as I do this one. If people want their kids to hold her, it's a flat no! I also never spent so much time on grooming a dog as I do this one. I want her to be healthy and happy. I am like an over protective mother with her. If I am invited some place for dinner, I ask if my baby can come along! I hate to leave her, although she goes in her crate and I know she sleeps while I am gone. We are invited the 15th to a lodge my brother owns to have a close family time together---just the immediate family. He said I could take my dog, but he has 3 big dogs, and my other brother has one big dog. I may have to leave her with my daughter, but she has 2 small boys that I am afraid might accidently hurt her. It's a worry! Pat |

Toto doesn't seem overweight to us either, but she is carrying around 4.5 lbs. on little tiny 3 lb. knees!! :o Dr. Lucy is trying to plan ahead for her so we won't have any problems later on ... but like you, I don't feel that she is getting that much fat. She does like a little parm sprinkled on her veggies and sometimes a little sour cream ... I always use low or no-fat. Anytime she seems a little "irregular" we give her a couple teaspoons of minced apple rather than medication. Dr. Lucy said it was OK and it usually does the trick. ;) |

Holy mackerel bettyeanne! Two to three hours for a bath? Yikes! How often does little Toto get bathed? I thought ours was bad at about 25-30 minutes for one, about once a week or so... |

:o Yep ... but that includes all the "pamper" brushing before and after. She likes to nap at least 1-1.5 hrs. wrapped up and snuggling in fluffy towels to dry with me holding her, of course! Beginning to end ... about 2-3 hrs. We both love this time together and she enjoys the brushing. We do this at least once a week ... sometimes more if she gets dirty! Like I have said before ... she's a "tad" spoiled!! ;) |

That's lovely! She must really really like her bath when she gets that much attention! They are our babies, arn't they? It's below zero here, and she is still going outside to go potty. I feel sorry for her though. But, never realized she could go so fast! Out , do her business and right back in! AMAZING! Pat |

Nothing wrong with being spoiled, bettyeanne, we ALL know that! :) Wow, I guess with long hair, you really do have to put your time and effort into it if you want the hair show-quality, which Toto definitely looks like! |

We had the "plug" issue last week...we'd only had Max for a few days, and dh & I were a bit freaked out. Newbies! LOL Once I got him to hold Max in the appropriate position, I could see what was going on I grabbed my scissors & a couple of snips later, my bug was happy as can be. I'm glad Eddie's ok! I'll have to get some of the pumpkin, just in case. Toto is such a cutie! It's funny to hear about the self-imposed schedule...sounds just like my 3 year old daughter! :) |

Thanks! Yep! Toto is an absolute joy! :) When she used to get those awful "pancakes" she would have the saddest look on her little face and would kinda back up to one of us for help! After we finally realized what she was doing, we could sorta read her expression and usually were right. Poor baby ... she hated it as badly as we did! :o Since we have been following Dr. Lucy's advice and putting the little ponytails up, we hardly ever have anything "hang on"! She is funny about her little schedule! She wants her naps the same time every day and gets grumpy if her schedule gets interrupted. She also goes into play mode every day about the same time! The oddest thing is how she just "knows" about 30 minutes to an hour before time for Patrick to get home from the office! She lies on the rug near the front door with her little chin on her paws and patiently waits. She can hear his key when he puts it in the courtyard door and jumps up and peeks through a little gap I left for her at the bottom of the sheer on the front doors ... when she sees him she starts a little "dance" that she does and gets so excited! She waits for him to pull off his shoes and sit in his recliner where she promptly lies on his chest. She allows him enough time to rest a little ... lets the two of us catch up on our day ... then she "demands" play time and undivided attention from him until after we all have dinner! She spends the rest of the evening going from Patrick's lap to mine and about 10 PM she wants to go to bed for the night! She is without a doubt the most intelligent little brat we have ever seen!! She's a "keeper"!! ;) |
