Hello everyone,

Im the proud daddy of a 8 week old s**tzu / Yorkie baby girl. :) She has made my world, but she is also chewing up my world :rolleyes: I know she is a baby, and is probably teething, but when she has probably $100 worth of chew stuff, yet she still wants to chew on me... :confused: When does the teething stop? I had been told that s**tzu Yorkies are relatively lap dogs, but when I pick her up to simply pet her, she growls and snaps at me. She has literally bit my hands so badly that she has drawn blood! And my wife and I dont get mad at her for "accidnets" she leaves in the house, although we do tell her "no" and take her outside, but she just wants to play around and not handle up on the business matter at hand. Then after 20 - 30 minutes outside, you attempt to pick her up, and she growls and snaps at you again. Ive pinned her loosely with my hand and did the whole "growl" thing at her to let her know Im the master of her, and she licks me so Ill let her go, then she goes back to making me into her "pin cushion". Ive called Man's Best Friend (a training facility) and they said to put rocks in a coke can and shake it firmly and say no loudly when she bites then give her the chew toy, but she shakes so badly from the can, she actually has tears come up in her eyes. Does anyone have some advice? I have a niece (6yrs old) who comes over alot and I dont want "Precious" (the Shorkie...should have been named "Little Marine" because she is a "Devil Dog" lol) to bite her. I mean she draws blood on my 34yr old hands, I could only imagine a 6yr olds little hands.

I use a loud "NO" and a squirt bottle to train puppies not to bite. It works everytime. I have never allowed a puppy to growl or bite. Tone of voice and a squirt bottle of water can work wonders for training. I actually have a small bottle that I carry everywhere during training. My youngest is now 7 months and would never growl or bite me now but was a meany before training. The "NO" and squirt bottle has always worked great if used consistently.

At 8 weeks puppies are still learning how to be puppies. Chances are she's playing with you, I have 2 puppies, and they growl and bite when they play with each other. Because the pup is so young, she hasn't learned when play biting gets too rough. Try squalling everytime she bites too hard and gently push her away. When I got Titus at 8 weeks he did the same thing, now that he has a pal, 12 week old Phoebe, he's a whole lot better about it. She's teaching him when he bites too hard. Just have patience and let her know when she's biting too hard, chances are she's just playing.

Actually the obedience trainer told us to put a little vinegar in the squirt bottle..try buying her a little kong and fill it with peanut butter, better to bite on that than your fingers. When she's biting your hand, you can also ball your hand in to a fist, it's much harder to bite it that way. hard to get on to them when they're so cute, isn't it?? ;)

I did eat a pickle the other day after I read that you put something sour or bitter on yor hands and they more than likely wont bite you as much. Not Precious. She actually LICKED MY HANDS CLEAN! LOL My dog is crazy. She saw where the pickle came from and now she attacks the pickle jar everytime she sees it! :)

Well, you know the bitter apple they say to spray on furniture where they're chewing, and it will keep them from chewing?? Mine loved the taste of it..:) oil of cloves is the only thing I found that worked on that, and it's expensive..

I'd give anything to go back to the 8 week biting!! This is the perfect time to teach your baby not bite because they are the most impressionable at this stage. My trainer told me to start with yelping loudly and walking away when my dog started to bite me. This also means stop playing with her when she bites on purpose.

If this doesn't work you start doing time outs. The trick to time out is that you have to do it quick like within seconds. So you can purposely train her to bite you in your time out area and then leave immediately. She won't like being left alone. You can leave her in there for about 1 minute once the barking or crying has stopped. After a while she won't want to do it anymore. Good Luck!

Welcome to YT Jim!! I have a Shi Tzu AND a Yorkie in two dogs. You got them both together! The best of two breeds.

I think you're not dealing with two different, although normal, issues. Puppy biting is very normal. They have to learn either a) not to bite at all, or b) how much pressure to use. Just the other day, I was playing with Coby and was amazed to suddenly realize he has learned the perfect bite pressure (unless we're both grabbing for the same time of course! :eek: )

The growling/snapping part is a different issue, and it sounds like you're trying to deal with the dominance/pack leader thing.

8 weeks old is very young. So stay steady. Several weeks of hard work pays off with YEARS of happy co-existance and love.

Is she play growling? I scream ouch if mine bite me and they instantly stop. I haven't had any problems with them since I've done that a few times. Welcome to YT. Nice to have another gentleman join us ladies.
