Help-genetic predisposition/how to screen What kind of tests should I have done on my yorkies to determine if they have any genetic abnormalities or predispositions? My vet told me about 4 different things yorkies can be prone to and each requires different testing. 1) cataracts? - require testing from an opthamologist. 2) patela problems (knees?) x-rays 3) micro vascular dis... can be determined by a blood test or a liver biopsy 4) problems with their bite - determined by an exam. Both my male and female had all their well puppy exams, shots and worming on time. At 1 1/2 years they mated and produced a litter of 4 pups. One of the pups had an over-bite. Is this common and how could I have prevented getting this or could I? Neither of my dogs has a bite problem. |

Very interesting question. Your vet or a very experienced breeder will help you, I'm sure. |
Genes Bites are a recessive gene..meaning parents do not have a bad bite, but carry the gene. When bred to another Yorkie who carries the recessive gene you can get a bad bite...many genes are recessive and do not pop up, others pledge you. You had no way of knowing. If you use another male with this female is may or may not happen, depending if the male carries the same recessive gene. You could repeat the breeding and not get a repeat..but with a litter of 4, I believe it is a 25% given. |
