So Sorry Do you have a heating pad underneath him? Do you know how to tube feed? You need to do this every 2 hours and be very careful. Check the length of the tube every few days, so it goes to the stomach and not the lungs. You may still loose this one. Nature as a way to wean out the weak. Just be prepared. Have you talked to your vet yet? Best of luck - I hope he makes it. Gordan and Bennett's book tells and shows how to tube feed. I used this once years ago with one litter and they all made it. I was verrrrrry tired when it was over, but glad they turned out all healthy. T. |
get you an eye dropper and give him a little bit at time. or ask your vet about tube feeding it. |
When my puppies were born, I noticed around day 2 or three that one of 5 was not gaining weight. I tried to bottle feed, syringe, eyedropper. I found he could not do any of those. He could however latch on to mommy if I held his shoulders and head still. I put her on the bed with him, would hold him until he latched on and hold her still while he suckled. I did this for a full day around day 3. He gained 1 oz. I continued feeding him this way about 4 x per day for a few more days. His mom would lick him off, the siblings would push him off, and he had a hard time holding on as he seemed to use the tip of the teat. The vet was going to teach me to tube feed on day 5 if he didn't gain weight, but he did fine. He is almost 6 weeks old now, I feed him canned puppy food now, he is my best eater (I think he is always starving, still). He is only about 1 pound, but so far-so good. YOU CAN DO IT! |
feeding You need to feed him every 2 hours when they are newly born. Try seperating the mom and see if he will nurse form mom first. If not, then try eyedropper. But you have to be so careful with the eye dropper too, because it can still get in their nose and you don't want that. If that doesn't work - try tube feeding. It was easy for me, but you have to do it right and always check the length. As the pups grow you must change you length marks. It was very easy for me, but did make me very nrevous. But is I did not do it they would have died. Sometimes you just do what you have to do. Your vet should be able to show you how. It is difficult to tell how exactly to tube feed in writing and not have to write so much. Let us know how it turns out. T. |
