Xpen Should I get an Xpen and where would be the best place ot buy one? Our yorkie, 9 months old, is usually not left long by herself. We crate her when we have to leave her alone and she is fine with that. But...with the holidays coming, we may be out of the house longer and at dinner time when she would eat. She isn't trained to use a pee pad...in fact she isn't totally trained to go outside either. She has her good day and bad days!!!! How do I go about training her to be in an xpen and potty on the pads. We tried potty pads when she was younger and she just tore them up. Someone just told me to try to train her in a litter box with a peepad in it instead of litter. Is she too late for this new training? Any suggestions would be great. |
I use this xpen and use 4 panels so it is smaller and then I put 4 pee pads under it to protect the floor and when I put the xpen down a little of the pee pads stick out so the xpen holds them in place and where they 4 meet in the middle I put his crate on top of it (with the gate part off) and he does really well. The first week or so he had accidents but once we got the routine down he has only had maybe 1 or 2 pee accidents...but that was when he was home longer than normal. I would suggest getting one and start leaving him in it and extending the times a little each day until the holidays...expect a few accidents in the beginning...but it won't take long before you baby gets used to it. Mine love sit...he sleeps in his crate at night but does not do well leaving him in it to go anywhere...so we put it in his crate in the xpen and he goes in it to sleep when he wants too...and I put lots of chew toys in the xpen so he can play too:) Here is the xpen that I use: http://www.petco.com/product/5992/No...t-Yard-XT.aspx I got the 6 panels and the extra 2 panels to make it bigger to play outside in the summertime...:) Good luck! |

Why not buy some washable pee pads. Mine would also tear up the paper ones but I love the washable ones. I have some trained to the outside and some to pee pads. Put up the x-pen or 2 hooked together and put a couple pads in at first on the far end with her crate open at the other (or bed) and when she gets the knack of using them go to just one pad. |
I don't think it's ever too late, and I think the catbox with the pee pad is a good idea. They have some stuff you can spray on it that attracts them to the pee pads. |

My Yorkie can climb out of x-pens, so I have to put a top on it. |
Ryans pet supply sells some really nice puppy pens. Its great for yorkies to stay in while you are gone. It has a coated wire bottom so that pee falls through into a pan and it s big enough to put a bed in and the food and water dishes and plenty of room for the dog to move around. they have a cover too so they cant climb out the top. I have had very good luck with these as well as the x-pens. |
