Help! I need some advice.... I have 2 yorkie's boy and a girl. My girl is very tiny probably (rough guess) 3lbs and my boy is standard size if not a little larger maybe. Boy is 2 yrs 9mths and my girl is 1 next week. Hollie is in 2nd season and having not had either one neutered yet i have been keeping them apart for last couple of weeks. This was until my mother in law came over a couple of days ago, let herself in whilst we were at work, let dogs out unknowingly and left them in kitchen together for rest of afternoon. I came home to find both dogs together, hollie is so small she can fit in a gap between fridge and work kitchen units and was hiding out there. As you can imagine i was so cross as i religiously kept them apart to avoid risk of her becoming pregnant but she did it by accident without knowing that they needed to be kept apart and why. I am extremely concerned about the risks this would pose to her should she become pregnant because she is so small. Does anyone have any advice? |
If they were tied, most likely she is pregnant, and with her being so small and him bigger, I would take her in to the vets..having those babies could kill her! |
All you can do at this point is hope that she's not pregnant. I'd talk it over with your vet and see what he thinks. |
Consider having her spayed. I just did that with my little 4 lb girl, cause I was afraid she might have gotten pregnant even with keeping them apart. I should have had it done before she went into heat, but everything went just fine and now I don't have to worry about it. ;) Martha |
Please have your girl spayed now. She is much too small to have a litter of puppies. Spaying will end the possible pregnancy and your female should do fine. |
Oh no! It's too bad our family members can show up so unexpectedly...I don't think you can get her spayed while she's in heat, but definitely call your vet...Good luck! |
If it were me I would talk to the vet and have her spayed right now. They can spay while she is in heat, just costs a little more i believe. I hope everything works out ok. |
This is a little off subject but just curious- do you plan to breed the girl or had you just not had her spayed yet? If not why? Not judging or anything just curious? |

morning after pill Right before we had our min. schnazer fixed she got preg w/ a big dog that jumped the fence and got her (which is why you can't leave yorkie girls out... can you imagine a giant lab getting her? yikes!) anyway... the vet in arkansas gave her what was like the morning after pill for dogs... she was a little lathargic for 2 days then fine! |
Thank you for all your advice Hi there, just wanted to thank you all for your advice it was much appreciated and very useful. Called Vet on Fri afternoon as soon as it happened she was in surgery and had to call me back. She didn't seem at all concerned and told me there was no way she could get me in before Mon morn. She said Hollie couldn't be spayed until 3 mths after season. Surely being spayed whilst on heat in circumstances like these is the same here in UK? Needless to say i have been really upset by the vets lack of urgency or useful advice. I am taking her tomorrow morn and i will see what options we have? One of the reasons i had delayed having her spayed was because after her first season she developed a uterine infection and was quite poorly for a while. She is now absolutely petrified of the vets surgery and staff and i hate to see her so distressed. What a weekend!! Thanks again x |

Which obviously now after this is a big wake up call that is no excuse not to have her done and intend to get the procedure done as quickly as possible. x |
Most vets don't like to spay while a dog is in heat, but some will. It just takes more time and is a little riskier as there is quite a bit more bleeding - a lot more vessels have to be tied off during the surgery. But any vet should be willing to spay a dog in an emergency situation such as this. If your vet won't do it, find another one who will. |

When she was diagnosed with uterine infection i was confident that i could trust my vet to do whatever she thought necessary and give the very best treatment to make sure my baby was ok. I wasn't aware that spaying her at that time would have been a good idea? I'm not an expert on vetinary medicine i just love my dogs very much and always want whatever is best for them. Will start looking for new vet as you suggested |
Well, I'm not an expert either but a pyometra is extremely dangerous. Giving meds can work but isn't a guarantee. The best is to do an emergency spay which is what most vets will do. Maybe your vet had a reason though? |
Good luck in the search for a new vet......definately have her spayed, it can be done.....Do not consider the morning after pill, it has been known for adverse affects...mostely death in yorkies. |
