I need your help with our older dog Sherlock is 10 years old and seems to not want to play with Sal. Sal has tried to be social but Sherlock walks away. Sherlock tries to eat Sal food and drinks his can milk. I can not get Sherlock to even sit by him. Sal will come over and Sherlock with sniff him without trying to do no harm to him. I am just concern that they will never be friends. What should I do? |
How old is Sal, and is Sal also a yorkie, or other breed? |
Your oldest dog has been with you since he was a pup? They usually tend not to become friends overnight, and sometimes, never do have much to do with eachother..Always do everyhting first with the dog that has been there the longest..like treats, give to the older one first, etc etc. he may come around, or he may never have anything to do with him..time will tell |
Sal is... 5 weeks old and he is a yorkie mixed. Sherlock is much older and is an english beagle. I hope that they will be friends I am not to sure if I can stand the thought that Sherlock hates Sal. |
Mr. Bear is 10 or more (rescue, age unknown) and he has never played with a new pup, he pretty much ignores them or moves away. This may be because he lived in a kennel all his life, but I think he just doesn't want to play with a rowdy puppy. As long as he's not aggressive toward the pup he's fine. |
Ok... lets see, you have a 10 year old, and a 5 week old. It's very normal for the older baby to be distant from the little one over the next weeks, or even months. Some take longer to adjust to a new addition than others. My suggestion is, give them both the same amount of attention, cuddles, and kisses. You can, while the baby is taking naps, give sherlock some "alone" time with you, to reassure her, that she IS your number one, and you still love her as much as you always have. Ive never given the older dog a treat first, i give it to them randomly, and ive never had jealousy issues, but i always make sure, they get the same amount of "mommy" time, cuddles, and kisses. Good luck, i'm sure it will turn out fine for you. |
friends I have four yorkies, an 11 yr old. a 10 yr old, a 2 yrold and a 7 mo old. The two older ones would really have nothing to do with the two younger. I think it's just the age difference. You can't expect a much older dog to play like a puppy. I doubt he "hates" him though. |

I'm not saying, she has to do the same, we all do what works best for us, i just told her how we do it. I know the trainers teach this, but for us randomly works perfect, we have a lab thats the oldest, but they all know they get the same treat, and we have never had any issues. :) |
How does your pup get along with your female? Sometimes a female will be friendlier toward a pup and more likely to bond with it than another male. |
When Jade arrived at my home , Zsa Zsa was 12 years old . The only thing Zsa Zsa with her was her little bed . She never played with Jade , didn't allow Jade to go on her pee pad , never shared food bowl . |
With my 4 , every time I introduced an new babie, it took a couple days, sometimes it can take longer, to adjust to each other, your new baby is very small and young, so your older baby is having to adjust not being the only dog in the house, they should make friends soon:) please post a pic of them:) |
