Off the growth chart
 

HI- My yorkie is 11 weeks. At his 9 week check up he weighed 2.5 oz., which is off the weight chart for Yorkies. Also, the breeder claims his moma is around 8 pds. and his daddy weighs more than her. I was hoping for a Yorkie that would weigh no more than 7 pds.. How accurate is the growth chart? The breeder claims that you never can tell what Yorkie pups are going to weigh, if their ears will stand up, or their hair color will change to. Is this true? I love him and will be happy no matter what!!! Just curious!!!

He weighed 2.5 OZ or 2.5 LBS?

If he weighed 2.5 lbs at 9 wks I don't think he'll be teeny tiny, if both his parents weighed over 8 lbs, then he most likely will weigh at least that much.

The growth chart has not been true for either of my girls. Spanky, my senior grew until she was 6 months old and never budged beyond that, even though she was on the "larger" side as a baby. As a healthy adult she remained around 5 to 5.5 lbs.
Mango, my baby, was only 1.8 lbs when I bought her home at 11 weeks. That should have put her at 3.5 lbs adult sized (according to the chart). She appeared to have stopped growing at 11 months; she has been 4.6 lbs consistently since then and will be one year old next week.

I cannot tell you how many Yorkies I have seen in this forum that have not grown according to the chart. There are just way to many genetic/other factors involved to accurately predict the adult size of your baby. All I can say is that no matter their weight/lack thereof.... we love our babies to SMITHEREENS!:D

I really don't know, my daughter's male weighed 2lb 9 oz at 8 weeks and he now weighs 11lb 2 oz at 1 year. My Stella has the same father different mothers and weighed 1lb 13 oz at 8 weeks and now weighs 5 lb 4 oz at 11 months. Her male is larger than all the breeders dogs which we saw on site. Sometimes I think it's kinda like a box of chocolates, you can be surprised.

I believe that it was Mardelin on YT that said that there's only one thing you can guarantee and that is that they'll make a liar out of you everytime. So many factors play in and I've seen the chart work and I've seen it be way off.

If his mom was 8 pounds and his dad bigger than that, I think you could assume before you even got him that he'd be over the 7 pound standard. As long as he is healthy, though, that's the most important thing.

it would show him to be a little less than 6 1/2 lbs full grown..I did use this one for Ginger on her 12 week shots and 15, and it's still giving me the same reading for adult weight..Will check it out again on the next set of shots..I gave it to a girl I know with 3 yorkies, and it was within 1/4 of a pound on all 3 of hers, she said it was the best one she had ever used..of course, there can be some that just get way bigger than we expected, like my 14 lb one..:(

in my opinion, the growth chart is accurate about half the time and if you are using the one on YorkiePassions website, you must remember that the chart was made for Kimberly's line and her dogs. All bloodlines do not grow the same. When i got Ceeby, the breeder told me he would n't get over four pounds. he went so far off the growth chart when he had his spurts, that i thought I had a Great dane size yorkie. Then at about six months old, he settled right in and weighs 4 lbs at two years old. Sometimes he even weighs less than that but never over. He stopped growing about six months.

Belle was about 3 lbs when i picked her up-- 5 a couple of months later, and 7.2 at 1 year; she's 1 year and 3 months now... i have yet to weigh her again, but i think she's still about 7-- breeder said she'd be between 3 and 5 pounds... but i think she's perfectly sized for me :)

Very good point. Breeders usually are pretty close to knowing how big their puppies will be if they have done the same breeding before.

I'm really not sure how accurate these charts are but the two i have used say that my Pixie wont be over 2.5 lbs as an adult, I really hope this is not true and she makes it to 3 or over as her size does make me very worried.:( I havent had her weighed in a few weeks so will take her to my vet this week to find out what she is now as i'm not sure how accurate my kitchen scales are! I think she is around 2lbs (i hope!) and she will be 6 months old 4th december.

Just to add, I think her mother was around 3.5lbs so maybe she has a good chance of reaching that.

Another thing to consider is body type. My Kalina's dam and sire are both the same length and height but one weighs 5.5# and one weighs 4#. Kalina is 5.5#. She isn't physically large, but she is solid as a rock.

Very true. Kayla and Brookie both have short legs and a short body, but are very solid in their bodies. They weigh 6.5 and 7 lbs, but you would never know it by looking at them.

Maddie stayed on her growth chart...she was supposed to be around 5 lbs full grown...and she's 5 lbs, 2 ounces at over a year.

Sophie was the biggest in her litter (well she and her brother), and all weighed between 4 and 6 ounces at birth. By 12 weeks they were only: 14 ounces, 16 ounces, 20 ounces, 26 ounces, 28 ounces, and 30 ounces. She estimated they would be...in this same order: 2 lbs, 2.5 lbs, 3 lbs, 3.5 lbs, 4 lbs (sophie), and 4.5 lbs. Sophie is now 6 months old and 3 lbs...I DOUBT she'll ever make it to 4. Her tiny sisters are around 2.5 lbs now I think.

Now comes the strangest...my sister's dog Chloe was 2 lbs, 3 ounces at 6 weeks!!! She was estimated to be a BIG girl around 10 lbs. I watched the lady weigh her. She was very solid and much larger than Maddie or Soph as a puppy. At 3 months she was 3 lbs. At 4 months she was 4 lbs. At 5 she was 4.5 lbs. At 6 she was still 4.5 lbs. She is now 9 months old and only 5 lbs, 5 ounces...now...she COULD make it to a larger size by the time she's fully grown...but I highly doubt it.

I've always heard that the only slightly acceptable way of predicting the adult weight of puppies is to look at past litters those two exact parents have made. That's the ONLY semi-indicator...and even that can be wrong. If it's their first litter...you NEVER know.

My little Ryder was born at 3 ounces...his bigger brother was also 3 ounces. Now, at 8 weeks, the smallest in the litter is 15 ounces, and the largest is 19 ounces. It's just sooo hard to tell!!!!! :rolleyes:

Rockies dad is 4 pounds at a year old, mom 5 pounds. His grandad is 3 pounds over a year. My loverable Rockie is 5 pounds at 6 months:p But he has really slowed down with his eating. So he will probably get to 7 pounds or so.
