Size? When I was doing research on getting a yorkie I read that the AKC standard weight is 4lbs - 7lbs. and that anything under 4lbs or over 7lbs couldn't be a AKC show dog. Im not interested in showing my girl just wondering about this size thing. I hear and read lots of bad things about the smaller ones. And the teacup and doll yorkies? From my understanding there are no such things? |
Standard is bet. 4 and 7lbs but there are plenty that are more or less. I don't think they can be shown though, they have to be standard. |
below standard I have a 3 1/2 pound baby... Princess Chloe Elizabeth Diane (ok.. my 5yr old named her... and the Diane was a requirement from my mom heer bought her for my daughter...lol) so well my 5yr old has her... but she is perfectly healthy. That is just the breed standard for show. Now I realize that the smaller you go and bigger you go outside breed standards the more likely to have different problems... but it is just not always the case. I think a lot of people on her have 3lbers that have NO problems. |
The breed standard for size is actually under 7 lbs not 4-7 so a 3 1/2 lbs dog is still within standard. |
I just checked the AKC website and it does say under 7 lbs. Anyone know if this was changed because Im almost sure it used to say 4 -7 lbs. |

As far as size, as someone pointed out, any Yorkie 7 lbs and under is considered within the standard. Generally, health issues come from irresponsible breeding. Breeders who are diliberately trying to produce the really small dogs are typically not concerened with the overall welfare of the dogs, so naturally wouldn't care if they are passing genetic defects and illness on...they kind of go hand in hand. Those who care about the health and well being of the dogs will generally put more emphasis on the dogs' overall well being...both health AND standard. There are lots of little ones who are fine health wise. However, regardless of how healthy they are, they ARE still more prone to injury because of their size. Now, don't tell them that, cause they might get their feelings hurt and try to prove you wrong by romping with the bigger dogs.:p |
it has always been seven pounds and under to my understanding. I have heard it said or seen it posted on here over and over between 4-7 but I have never seen that on the AKC website or any other official paper. |
The Standard Reads not to exceed 7 pounds. |
Here is the official verbage off the YTCA website Weight . Must not exceed seven pounds. . Approved April 12, 1966 . |
Wow I have never heard of anyone describing a yorkie as a "doll yorkie," that is a new one... |
