Rabbies shots??
 

What age do you give rabbies shots? Is 3 months too young?:confused: :confused:

My vet gave Rockie his rabies shot at 4 months. It really depends on what your vet says and of course your furbaby. Some babies deal really well with their rabies shots. Also I have seen some that don't. I would really talk to my vet on that issue. Rockie was sore and quiet the entire day.

Rabies shots can be done at 3 months. :) Mr. Biggs is getting his again tomorrow :(

Rabies shots can only be done once a year... right? Meka had hers at 6 mo's... I was told that they were suppose to have most of the other shots prior to the rabies shot. Everywhere is different...

We had Penny's done at 6 months.

My vet requested I bring Rockie back next year for his 2nd shot of rabies. Its just done once a year is what my vet told me.

We had ours done at 5 months...We had spread the shots out so they did not get shot overload...so to speak:rolleyes:

My Yorkies got theirs at 6 months and annually thereafter. My new Maltese got his at 3 months, maybe because that's when he was exported from Peru to Mexico.

As a breeder and per my breeder I don't recommend rabies prior to 6 months of age.

What age your puppy will get his rabies shot and how often will depend on what state you live in.

You live in Texas, right? Texas law requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies by age four months.

I lived in Texas until a few months ago.....vets will work with you....I know my vet did me...Gave their rabies between 6 and 7 months and only 1/2 dose...He was very cognicent of toy breeds.....and knew that innoculations could cause adverse reactions.....and even death.....With a 1/2 dose...I knew that they would have to have a repeat injection at a year old....and every 3 years thereafter. Do a google search on Vetinary School new vaccination recommendations...

VACCINATION NEWSFLASH June 2006 re: J Dodd's vaccine protocol - I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats.

Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects.

Politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic well-being should not be a factor in medical decision.

NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY:
Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells induced.

Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines.

Puppies receive antibodies through their mother’s milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced.

Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first highly effective vaccine.

Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart SUPPRESS rather than stimulate the Immune system.

A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age.

Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year and 4 months will provide lifetime immunity.

Didn't Texas used to require yearly rabies boosters until recently? Or am I confusing it with another state?

And you must remember vaccinations are what vets make their money on.

Actually, rabies protocal varies from county to county and city to city in Texas

Now you must understand my vet is very breeder friendly....and also owns a yorkie from my mentor....so, he's very knowledgable in the toy breed. He inherited a practice from a vet that was my mentor's previous vet...so, coming out of vet school...... he cut his teeth on yorkies, so to speak

Since I give my own vaccinations (he only gave the rabies)....I contributed to his practice by vet checks, annual check ups, teeth cleaning....emergencies....etc....and also a referred patients to him that have made him their vet.

Elphaba gets her's this Thursday...just a week shy of 4 month.
